Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in nursing is required, with employees hired before December 2019 grandfathered from the BSN requirement.
- At least one year of operating room nursing experience in an acute care setting immediately prior to application is required.
- Two years of recent outpatient surgery experience are required.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently, are required.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and the ability to understand, follow, and successfully perform duties, including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures, in accordance with administrative and clinical policies, regulations, and procedures are required.
- A valid California Registered Nursing license is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; if not held upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
- Provide therapeutic care to a specific patient population as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team.
- Use the nursing process to design, coordinate, and deliver care during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical intervention.
- Assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient outcomes based on standards of care.
- Address the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual effects of the surgical experience on patients.
- Provide peer education and patient and family teaching, support and reassurance, advocacy, environmental control, resources, aseptic practice, physiological and psychological monitoring, aggregate patient-needs management, supervision of ancillary personnel, preoperative exploration, practice validation, and coordination of care across settings and disciplines.
- Adhere to Universal Patient Safety Goals and medication-labeling safety standards on and off the sterile field.
- Apply scientific knowledge through the nursing process and formulate direct and indirect care plans.
- Perform skills essential to nursing actions.
- Delegate tasks based on scope of practice, preparation, and capability.
- Evaluate care effectiveness and modify care plans through observation and interpretation of information.
- Advocate for patients by initiating actions that advance the plan of care and support change decisions.
- Ensure electrical, laser, radiology, and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging safety.
- Follow correct-site surgery and surgical time-out standards under the Universal Protocol.
- Operate the autoclave and Steris equipment correctly and complete the appropriate documentation.
- Communicate information to staff using Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation handoff communication regarding patient care and flow.
- Document patient charges, implant records, pathology specimens, and preoperative records accurately and promptly.
- Use the Cerner system accurately for documentation and update preference cards as needed.
- Follow policies for instrument, sponge, and sharps counts.
- Practice according to collaboration principles and demonstrate respectful teamwork and delegation.
- Follow Title 22 and Joint Commission standards.
- Participate in professional-practice development, nursing committees, research, policy development and review, and unit-based improvement projects.
- Maintain current knowledge of policies, trends, and technology and share awareness of new developments.
- Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy and procedures when preparing equipment, supplies, and instrumentation for assigned procedures.
- Maintain specialty carts continuously, including par levels, organization, cleaning, and removal of outdated supplies, and serve as a resource to others for the specialty cart.
- Organize and prepare surgical suites daily, including the operating room, run room, hallways, and carts.
- Facilitate smooth surgical intervention flow by preparing procedures with updated preference cards and knowledge of instruments and equipment.
- Participate in hospital-wide and departmental performance-improvement activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
