About the Job

Requirements

  • A Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with at least 10 years of experience designing, prototyping, and testing in the medical device industry.
  • Expert proficiency with computer-aided design, preferably SolidWorks, mechanical drafting standards, and product data management versioning.
  • In-depth experience with quality systems, medical product development processes, and risk management.
  • Experience with injection molding and interacting with injection-molding vendors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with technical and operations personnel at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering functions across product development stages, including system architecture, requirements definition, concept generation, prototyping, design verification testing, and reporting.
  • Support monitoring device performance in the field, troubleshooting, leading design improvements, and production support, including production at scale.
  • Use mechanical engineering knowledge and systems and medical device understanding to design and develop products and product features.
  • Lead product design throughout its lifecycle, driving changes from initial concept to final production using good documentation practices and releasing documentation through the engineering change order process.
  • Generate and maintain design documentation, including design failure mode and effects analysis, risk analysis, requirements definition, engineering drawings, tolerance stack-up, and computational analysis.
  • Work with cross-functional team members, including Electrical, Clinical, Quality, Regulatory, and Systems, to develop design solutions.
  • Interface with vendors for fabrication and assembly to ensure parts conform to engineering specifications, design documentation, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Develop test plans, protocols, and reports; perform subassembly and system-level verification testing; and design and document fixtures for product and subassembly testing.
  • Investigate and perform root-cause analyses for field or manufacturing failures.
  • Work with Systems Engineering and other functions to develop regression test plans for design changes.
  • Develop project plans and schedules and track deliverable progress.
  • Understand applicable national and international standards and ensure product designs comply with them.
  • Ensure smooth transition of new products into manufacturing environments in low-cost global regions as a key cross-functional team member.
  • Perform other duties assigned related to product development.
  • Interface with vendors and/or direct or coordinate prototype fabrication and assembly activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering specifications; document designs and manufacturing recommendations.
  • Travel approximately 10–15%, including internationally.

Desired Qualifications

About the Company

Element Science

Wearable defibrillator for sudden cardiac arrest

Element Science creates medical devices to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. Its flagship product, Jewel, is a wearable external defibrillator intended to provide around-the-clock protection by monitoring the heart and delivering a life-saving shock when needed. Jewel is not yet commercially available in the U.S. This device works by continuously monitoring cardiac rhythm and, if a dangerous rhythm is detected, delivering a controlled electrical defibrillation; it is designed for use by at-risk individuals under medical guidance. The company differentiates itself by focusing on a wearable, user-friendly defibrillator and by prioritizing workforce diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), as well as growth through team expansion. Element Science aims to bring Jewel to market, work with healthcare providers and insurers, increase accessibility for patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, and grow its market share while reducing deaths from cardiac events.
