About the company

NVIDIA designs the chips and software that power artificial intelligence and sells complete data center systems to cloud providers, AI labs, and other businesses, along with GeForce graphics cards for gamers. Its GPUs, chips that perform thousands of calculations at once, became the main hardware for AI after researchers used them to train the AlexNet image-recognition model in 2012. NVIDIA connects many GPUs with its own processors and networking gear into servers and rack-sized computers, and developers program them through its CUDA software. These systems bring in most of its sales, and it also makes chips for cars and robots. Jensen Huang co-founded NVIDIA in 1993, and it is based in Santa Clara, California.

What believers are saying

  • AI demand is still surging: data center sales rose 117% to $89 billion in the quarter ending July 2026.
  • Stock grants are worth more: shares hit a record in October 2026, up 28% for the year.
  • Engineering dominates hiring: 1,722 of NVIDIA's 2,686 job listings in October 2026 were in engineering.

What critics are saying

  • Big buyers are hedging: Meta's February 2026 agreement covers 6 gigawatts of AMD chips.
  • Financing its buyers is getting harder: lenders pushed back on NVIDIA's $500 billion chip-backed loan plan in October 2026.
  • Staff described long hours: Bloomberg's August 2024 interviews reported seven-day weeks, late nights and shouting matches.

What makes NVIDIA unique

  • Rivals must match its software too: over 7.5 million developers use CUDA and other NVIDIA tools to program its chips.
  • The CEO has a broad direct staff: Jensen Huang says over 60 people report to him, without one-on-ones.
  • People rarely leave: NVIDIA's yearly staff turnover is 3.7%, versus a 21.9% average across the tech industry.

doubleAI raises $200M at $1B+ valuation for AI that rewrites code to run faster

Israeli AI developer doubleAI has raised $200 million in a Series A round co-led by Lightspeed and Bessemer. Nvidia Corp., Dell Technologies Inc. and several others joined. CTech reported that the round values the Tel Aviv-based company at more than $1 billion. DoubleAI's model, Maxwell, makes software more efficient by optimising a program's binary rather than its source code. The company says Maxwell sped up 55% of the algorithms in Nvidia's cuGraph library by a factor of two or more. It also improved pandas' performance on a query speed benchmark by a factor of 38. The company plans to sell Maxwell to enterprises that want to cut AI hardware usage. The Wall Street Journal reported that doubleAI will spend half the round on 1,000 Nvidia B300 Blackwell graphics cards.

Nvidia spends $7.05B on R&D versus AMD's $2.53B, but a 20% rise hits AMD's profit far harder

Nvidia can absorb a bigger research budget far more easily than AMD, a comparison of their latest quarters shows. Nvidia spent $7.05 billion on research and development in its quarter ended July 26; AMD spent $2.53 billion in its quarter ended June 27. Research took 7.3% of Nvidia's $96.22 billion revenue, against 21.9% of AMD's $11.54 billion. A 20% rise in research spending, with all else fixed, would cost Nvidia $1.41 billion and cut its $63.73 billion operating income by 2.2%. For AMD, the $506 million cost would cut its $1.99 billion operating income by 25.4%. AMD could gain more operating leverage if adoption of its chips grows without equally fast expense growth.

Nvidia at $5T trades at 8 times 2030 earnings forecasts, but don't bet on it

Nvidia trades at about 8 times what analysts expect it to earn in fiscal 2030, though that multiple will shift as forecasts change. The chipmaker is the only US-listed company with a market cap above $5 trillion. On trailing adjusted earnings, the stock trades at 27 times. On next year's earnings, it trades at 13 times. Revenue growth has accelerated over five quarters, from 56% to 106% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027. Nvidia's guidance points to a slight slowdown in the current quarter. Analysts have raised profit targets with each strong quarter. Nvidia's board recently authorised a record $150 billion in share repurchases, and the stock has risen ninefold over five years.

Nvidia's memory lock leaves even Google short, as Micron capex nearly doubles to $30.7B

Microsoft unveiled its Maia 300 AI chip on October 12, joining Big Tech rivals building their own processors to cut reliance on Nvidia. Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya says supply is the catch: Nvidia controls most packaging and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) capacity, leaving even Google short. Micron Technology has signed agreements for the vast majority of its 2027 HBM supply, at significantly higher prices than last year. Its capital spending nearly doubled to $30.7 billion in fiscal 2026 from $15.9 billion. Micron's chief executive officer, Sanjay Mehrotra, said much of the extra spending goes to cleanroom space arriving in late 2028 and beyond. Until then, rivals' chips can scale only as fast as memory allows.

Huang says a third of NVIDIA's business grows 30-40% without AI labs; stock at 17.7x earnings

NVIDIA chief executive officer Jensen Huang says the company can thrive without AI labs. On the BG2 podcast, he said about a third of the business is classical computing, growing 30% to 40% a year with no labs involved. Huang puts all frontier labs at 25% to 30% of NVIDIA's compute. The rest comes from startups and new clouds. "We're putting way too much pressure on two labs," he said. Revenue for the quarter to July 26, 2026 hit $96.2 billion, up 106% from a year earlier. NVIDIA guided to $108.0 billion for the quarter ending in October. Concentration remains a risk. Investor Steve Eisman noted that 70% of accounts receivable come from five customers. The stock trades at 17.7x forward earnings, against a 30.3x average.
