North Minneapolis residents file class-action lawsuit against shingle factory.

North Minneapolis residents file class-action lawsuit against shingle factory. Months after their complaints spurred EPA inspections that found violations, neighbors allege that they're harmed by Owens Corning's odors and pollution. Neighbors of a north Minneapolis shingle factory filed a class-action lawsuit this month accusing the company of failing to control odors and pollutants they say have harmed their well-being. Five northsiders signed on as initial plaintiffs in the federal suit against Owens Corning, which produces asphalt roofing shingles in the Shingle Creek neighborhood. The lawsuit comes four months after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found the factory violated the Clean Air Act by emitting excessive sulfur dioxide pollutants. The class action nature of the suit invites all residents living within three quarters of a mile of the factory to join as plaintiffs. The smell and pollution from the factory is harming their ability to fully enjoy their property, plaintiffs argue. "Stepping outside hurts our lungs," plaintiffs Jennifer Castello and Jessica Scott said in a statement included in the suit that noted their dog recently died of cancer. "It's also embarrassing to have friends and family visit and have to work around the smell." The lawsuit notes the June EPA violations and repeated complaints made to city and state officials about the odor coming from Owens Corning, including citations and fines issued by city inspectors in August 2025 and April 2026. Named plaintiffs and attorneys in the case did not respond to requests for comment by press time. Owens Corning declined to comment, citing pending litigation. The company was officially served the suit on Oct. 7, according to court filings. Shingles have been produced at the factory since 1945, when the locally owned Lloyd A. Fry Roofing Co. began operation. Ohio-based Owens Corning bought the facility in 1977. Under city zoning codes, the facility is labeled non-conforming, meaning it doesn't align with permitted uses in the area. Like many old factories in the Twin Cities, the residential neighborhoods around Owens Corning were redlined, the 20th century zoning practice that limited the ability of people of color to buy homes only in less desirable neighborhoods. Owens Corning can and should do more to control odors from the factory, the lawsuit contends. It accuses the company of failing to invest in equipment and chemical additives that could mitigate the effect of odors and emissions from the factory. "A properly operated, maintained, and managed facility will mitigate, prevent, and otherwise contain fugitive odor emissions by utilizing proper equipment, handling procedures, and storage at its facility," the suit states. Thousands of private homes lie within the initial class area. The suit accuses Owens Corning of private nuisance for harming people's ability to enjoy their homes, public nuisance for hindering the ability to recreate in parks and streets, and negligence in operating the factory. The lawsuit is seeking an undetermined amount in damages. No hearings are scheduled.

Owens Corning Roofing announces 2027 Shingle Color of the Year.

Owens Corning Roofing announces 2027 Shingle Color of the Year. Posted By: Mark Robins October 10, 2026 Owens Corning Roofing is introducing Summer Harvest as its 2027 Shingle Color of the Year, the latest selection in a program that has highlighted the power of color in home design for the past decade. Inspired by the beauty of late summer as it gently transitions into autumn, Summer Harvest brings together sunny gold hues, burnt sienna, touches of Atlantic blue, and desert tan tones. The result is a rich, nuanced blend that brings a fresh expression to a wide range of architectural styles, from craftsman cottages and mid-century modern homes to stately colonials. Available in the TruDefinition Duration Designer and TruDefinition Duration FLEX product lines, Summer Harvest captures a rustic sense of beauty and abundance while inviting homeowners to harvest the moments that make a house feel like home. Summer Harvest was selected by Owens Corning's in-house color experts as the 2027 Shingle Color of the Year. Each year, the team analyzes emerging influences across home design, fashion, interiors, and broader color trends to identify shades that have the potential to resonate with homeowners for years to come. The result is Summer Harvest, a rich blend of warm, nature-inspired tones that reflects growing consumer interest in colors that feel authentic, inviting, and timeless. As the 2027 Shingle Color of the Year, Summer Harvest continues Owens Corning's decade-long tradition of helping homeowners explore the role color can play in shaping a home's overall character and curb appeal. Color inspiration extends beyond a portfolio of beautiful shingle colors. Owens Corning offers a suite of color and design tools that help homeowners visualize roofing, paint, trim, and other exterior elements together for a coordinated look. "Although located at a home's highest level, the roof is a foundational element when it comes to creating a cohesive exterior design," said Jess Bell, marketing manager at Owens Corning. "Our online color and design tools help homeowners and contractors visualize how roofing and exterior elements work together to create a distinctive style statement that stands the test of time." The 2027 Shingle Color of the Year is also capturing the attention of a recognized voice in home design. Owens Corning is continuing its partnership with designer, author, and television personality Erin Napier, who featured online videos that encourage homeowners to think differently about the role a roof plays in their home's overall design. "We are proud to collaborate with Erin to offer homeowners expert design insights that help them find their perfect roof color," said Bell. While Summer Harvest makes a distinctive design statement, it is backed by the same trusted performance homeowners expect from Owens Corning Roofing. Like all shingles in the TruDefinition Duration Designer portfolio, Summer Harvest features patented SureNail Technology for advanced performance and durability and is also available in the Duration FLEX shingle line. The portfolio's combination of beautiful color options and trusted protection has helped Owens Corning earn the Women's Choice Award for nine consecutive years, recognizing the roofing brand women would highly recommend to family and friends. Remarking on the company's commitment to color leadership, Bell noted that interest in roof color has accelerated since the inaugural Shingle Color of the Year was introduced. "Homeowners are paying closer attention to how every exterior element contributes to the overall look and feel of their homes, and the roof plays an important role in that story," said Bell. "Summer Harvest reflects our commitment to offering colors that feel both current and enduring, helping homeowners create an exterior that is cohesive, personal, and timeless."
