About the job

Requirements
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including deep, hands-on experience delivering agentic or large language model-powered systems to production.
  • Proven ownership of complex, cross-cutting agentic systems spanning multiple teams or products.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals across backend systems, application programming interfaces, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Deep experience across the agentic artificial intelligence stack, including planning, tool use, memory, and evaluation.
  • Fluency with artificial intelligence-assisted and agentic development workflows.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous problem spaces and translating them into shipped, reliable autonomous systems.
  • Ability to influence technical direction and align teams without formal authority.
  • Experience with workflow engines, asynchronous processing, queues, and streaming systems.
  • Experience with Python, Go, and TypeScript; REST, gRPC, and in some areas tRPC; AWS and/or GCP; Kubernetes; and event-driven distributed systems, including Kafka.
  • Experience integrating commercial and open-source large language models into agentic workflows.
  • Experience with agent and orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or CrewAI, and judgment about when to use frameworks versus building lighter-weight primitives.
  • Model-level experience using PyTorch and the Hugging Face ecosystem, including embeddings, fine-tuning, and inference tooling, with some exposure to TensorFlow.
  • Strong schema, validation, and state management practices using tools such as Pydantic and Zod.
Responsibilities
  • Drive technical direction for agentic AI initiatives, influencing architecture patterns, autonomy boundaries, and system design.
  • Design, build, and operate production-grade agentic AI systems used across multiple products.
  • Own and evolve shared agentic AI capabilities, including agent frameworks and orchestration layers; planning, tool use, and memory strategies; retrieval and grounding pipelines; large language model infrastructure, inference, and model gateways; and evaluation, observability, and safety tooling for autonomous systems.
  • Lead technical design reviews and help teams navigate tradeoffs involving autonomy, safety, reliability, scalability, and cost.
  • Partner across teams to deliver complex, cross-cutting agentic AI initiatives from concept to production.
  • Evaluate emerging models, techniques, and agentic patterns and translate them into practical, enterprise-ready improvements.
  • Mentor senior engineers and raise the technical bar for agentic AI development through example and influence.
  • Work closely with Product and UX partners to shape a shared vision for agentic AI experiences and influence what gets built and how systems come together across teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience building agentic systems in fintech or other regulated industries.
  • Experience as a founding engineer or early technical leader in AI-driven products.
  • Demonstrated success delivering technically complex autonomous systems that customers actively rely on.
  • Meaningful contributions to open-source AI or agentic frameworks.
  • Familiarity with fine-tuning, model optimization, and inference pipelines.

About the company

American Express issues credit and pay-in-full charge cards to consumers and businesses, and unlike most card issuers it also runs the payment network its cards use. Its Travelers Cheque, launched in 1891, made carrying money abroad safer, and in 1959 it became the first major issuer of plastic cards. Cardholders earn points toward flights and hotels plus perks such as airport lounges, while companies use its corporate cards for employee travel and expenses. American Express earns a fee from merchants on each purchase, plus annual fees and interest on balances cardholders carry. Henry Wells and William Fargo, who later started Wells Fargo, co-founded it in 1850 as a freight delivery business; it is based in New York City.

  • Hybrid dominates listings: 408 of Amex's 451 roles in October 2026 mixed office and home days.
  • Room to grow in AI: Amex listed 56 AI and machine-learning jobs among 451 openings in October 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Stock grants lost value: Amex fell 17% through October 8, 2026; Visa rose 7% over the same period.

United Airlines sees loyalty revenue surge 13% as Amex cardholders boost premium spending

United Airlines reported strong second-quarter results driven by loyalty programmes, with American Express playing an unexpected role despite not co-branding a card with the carrier. United's MileagePlus card is issued exclusively by Chase through 2029, but Amex channels premium spend through its Platinum cardholders, who can designate United for a $200 annual credit on bags and fees. Business Platinum holders receive a 35% rebate on economy fares booked through Amex Travel. The airline also benefits from Amex's transfer partnerships with programmes like Air Canada Aeroplan and Singapore KrisFlyer, which provide access to United seats. United's chief commercial officer reported new co-branded card accounts rose 22% year-over-year, hitting a second-quarter record, whilst card spend increased 14%. Loyalty revenue grew 11.3%, or above 13% when adjusted for accounting changes.
