About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Shopify vs Amazon: Shopify falls 8% despite 32% revenue growth to $3.74B, but AI checkout edge remains

Shopify shares fell 8% after its third-quarter report, even as revenue grew 32% to $3.74 billion. Gross merchandise volume of $119.1 billion narrowly missed analysts' expectation of $120.1 billion. Operating income rose 66% to $568 million, and free cash flow reached $816 million, above the $723 million expected. Shopify expects fourth-quarter revenue to grow at a low-thirties rate. The company has pitched itself as the checkout behind AI shopping agents. Its checkout runs inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Meta's Muse at standard rates. Amazon, up 11% this year, is building its own agent, Rufus, and has blocked outside agents such as ChatGPT and Muse. Analysts expect Shopify's earnings to grow about 33% a year through 2028, against about 25% for Amazon. Shopify trades at about 57x 2027 estimates; Amazon trades at about 23x.

Amazon arranges $80B supplier financing for AI build-out as free cash flow turns $34.8B negative

Amazon has arranged up to $80 billion of secured supplier financing for technology infrastructure, according to its latest 10-Q filing. It can borrow against hardware it buys from the start of 2027 through the third quarter of 2028. The move follows a third quarter in which free cash flow was a $34.8 billion outflow, with capex at $77.3 billion. Total debt, including leases, nearly doubled in a year to $305 billion. AWS chief executive officer Matt Garman said Amazon wants to "responsibly fund" its opportunity so it can "go as big as possible." Investor Chamath Palihapitiya warned that AI firms' funding needs through 2027 equal 30% of what the Treasury will issue, which could raise borrowing costs. Amazon will give its 2027 capex outlook in early February.

Amazon says Prime Video is profitable, while Apple TV+ reportedly loses over $1B a year

Amazon says its Prime Video is now profitable, while Apple's streaming service reportedly still loses money. Amazon chief executive officer Andy Jassy said on the third-quarter earnings call that Prime Video has a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars. Amazon does not report its financials separately, but the ad tier reaches more than 315 million monthly active users, including more than 130 million in the US, according to The Wrap. Users can pay $4.99 a month for an ad-free version. Apple TV+ loses more than $1 billion a year, The Information reported. Apple spends about $4.5 billion on content annually, down from $5 billion, and the service has about 45 million subscribers at $14.99 a month.

Nvidia, Amazon and Alphabet: 3 AI stocks to buy in November after 10% post-earnings dip

A Motley Fool columnist names Amazon, Alphabet, and Nvidia as top AI stocks to buy in November. Amazon and Alphabet fell after their latest earnings, which he calls short-sighted. Google Cloud revenue rose 103% in the third quarter, lifting Alphabet's overall growth to 25%. The stock still dropped more than 10% the next day. Amazon Web Services grew 39% and makes up 63% of Amazon's operating profits. Both companies plan to spend $200 billion or more on capital expenditure this year. Nvidia has guided for 70% revenue growth in 2027 and trades at 26 times trailing earnings, or 13 times next year's projected earnings. If it returned to 26 times, the columnist says, the stock would double.

Amazon's $2B Ohio data centre faces vote as 41 AI infrastructure measures go to ballot

Amazon's planned $2 billion data center in Sunbury, Ohio, faces a threat on Tuesday, when residents vote on a measure that could block it. The ban would cover facilities needing more than 25 megawatts of electricity. It is one of 41 data-center ballot measures across 10 states. Of these, 28 would restrict development and 13 would ease it; Ohio accounts for 21. Voters backed tighter limits in all six measures decided earlier this year, with 66% to 90% in favour. Amazon won tax incentives in 2024, promising 50 permanent jobs, but the city has imposed a moratorium through January 2027. Residents cite electricity demand, water use, and noise. Amazon declined to say whether the votes would alter its expansion plans.
