About the job

Requirements
  • At least 2 years of experience as an outbound BDR or SDR, breaking into enterprise accounts or financial institutions against a meetings or pipeline target that was regularly exceeded.
  • A track record of breaking into enterprise accounts with tailored, well-researched outreach.
  • Strong, concise writing that uses the buyer's language.
  • Experience running conferences and events as a pipeline channel, including pre-booking, filling seats, and follow-up.
  • Ability to work without a playbook, having established a BDR process from scratch and run it independently.
  • Proficiency in outbound sales processes and tools, including Salesforce or HubSpot and familiarity with the rest of an outbound technology stack.
Responsibilities
  • Build Spade's outbound motion from the ground up, including channels, cadence, tooling, and the weekly operating rhythm.
  • Work a named list of target banks and fintechs by researching accounts and relevant contacts, initiating outreach, handling initial objections, and booking meetings with an account executive.
  • Own a qualified-meetings target and the associated pipeline, measured by outcomes rather than daily activity quotas.
  • Compose tailored sequences and messages on LinkedIn and email, testing messaging and channels to earn replies from target buyers.
  • Hand off each booked meeting with context so the account executive understands the buyer, their interests, and prior discussions.
  • Maintain accurate customer relationship management records and report weekly on reply rates, meetings booked, and show rates.
  • Own conference and dinner outreach, including invite lists, pre-booked meetings, attendance, and follow-up.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience selling to growth-stage and enterprise fintech companies and/or banks.
  • Experience serving as the first or only business development representative at a company.
  • An established LinkedIn presence or social selling experience that produces meetings.
  • Artificial intelligence fluency, including building research or list-building workflows that improve outreach.

About the company

Spade provides real-time transaction enrichment via an API that maps raw card transaction data to verified merchant identities, including granular category and geolocation details. The process starts when a client (such as a card issuer, neobank, or fraud platform) sends transaction data to Spade’s API; the system then matches the data to a real merchant identity, enriches it with additional attributes, and returns the enhanced transaction record to the client’s platform in under 50 milliseconds, enabling faster and more informed payment decisions during authorization. Spade serves fintechs and card ecosystems (examples include Ramp, Sardine, Unit, and Mercury) and differentiates itself through speed, real-time accuracy, and a security-conscious approach (SOC 2 certified and does not handle PII). The company's goal is to help clients improve authorization rates, strengthen fraud detection, and enable more capable card products by providing high-quality merchant data.

What believers are saying

  • Spade raised $40 million in March 2026 from Oak HC/FT and a16z.
  • The company says more than 85% of clients now use multiple workflows.
  • Expansion beyond enrichment targets a larger payments intelligence budget across banks and fintechs.

What critics are saying

  • Spade must defend against Stripe, ad hoc bank teams, and legacy data vendors.
  • Customer concentration stays dangerous if Mercury, Ramp, or Bilt reduce usage in 2026.
  • If agentic workflows fail, Spade remains a commodity enrichment API facing margin compression.

What makes Spade unique

  • Spade's 2025 Agent Layer expands enrichment into automated payments workflows.
  • Its proprietary database claims 99.9% US and Canadian merchant coverage.
  • Sub-40 millisecond P99 latency fits card authorization decisioning.

Spade raises $40M to structure messy bank transaction data

Spade, a company that transforms messy transaction strings into structured merchant data for banks and fintechs, has raised $40 million in Series B funding, CEO Oban MacTavish told Axios exclusively. The company addresses a critical challenge in banking automation: incomplete, inconsistent or difficult-to-read transaction data prevents banks from effectively automating rewards programmes, fraud checks and marketing efforts. Spade's technology helps financial institutions standardise and structure payment information, enabling better automation of customer-facing services and security features.
