Brian Malloy, Carpenter Technology CEO, dies suddenly after 3 weeks.

Brian Malloy, Carpenter Technology CEO, dies suddenly after 3 weeks. Published on 31 July 2026 at 12:25 am - Written by Chris Martin - Reading duration: 2 minutes · read 11 times Brian Malloy, the newly appointed CEO of Carpenter Technology Corporation, died suddenly on July 24, just three weeks after taking the helm of the Philadelphia-based specialty materials manufacturer on July 1. He was 59. Malloy's unexpected death prompted the company's board of directors to appoint Tony Thene, his predecessor and the firm's executive chairman, to return immediately as chief executive officer. Thene had led Carpenter Technology as CEO from 2015 through June 2026 before stepping back when Malloy was promoted. Carpenter Technology stock fell approximately 4 to 5 percent on Monday following the announcement, with shares trading around $575 to $580 after opening at $606. The decline reflected investor reaction to the sudden leadership transition at a company valued at roughly $3 billion annually. The company is a 137-year-old global leader in high-performance specialty alloys and materials used in aerospace, medical, defense, and industrial applications. Based in Philadelphia with approximately 4,500 employees and manufacturing facilities in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and Alabama, Carpenter Technology serves critical industries where material failure carries significant consequences. Malloy had joined Carpenter Technology in 2015, initially leading the company's titanium products and powdered metals unit. In 2023, he was promoted to chief operating officer before being named CEO in February 2026, with Thene transitioning to executive chairman. Before Carpenter, Malloy held executive positions at Ametek and Alcoa, and he held certifications in artificial intelligence from Northwestern University and digital transformation from MIT. The company had been performing strongly heading into the transition, with stock trading above $600 in recent weeks on expectations that Carpenter would benefit from increased U.S. military spending and new space orders. Malloy had been scheduled to report the company's recent financial results and discuss prospects in a conference call with investors on Thursday, which the board said would proceed as planned. Carpenter's Specialty Alloys division delivers best ever quarterly operating performance.

Carpenter's Specialty Alloys division delivers best ever quarterly operating performance. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Carpenter Technology has been on a good run over the past several years. Not only are its operating earnings consistently rising but it also beats analysts' consensus on a regular basis. This morning Carpenter, which was founded in Reading and still has substantial manufacturing assets there, reported sales and earnings that again topped Wall Street expectations. And although the company's stock was down 5.5% mid-morning, analysts at Zacks Equity Research believe this is simply an adjustment for an excellent company that has recently become over-valued and was trading near its 52-week high. Carpenter said the Specialty Alloys Operations (SAO) segment drove the results, delivering $208.0 million of operating income in the quarter and expanding adjusted operating margins to 35.6 percent, both significant increases over the previous quarter. The company explained margin expansion was driven by a combination of continued productivity gains, pricing across both long-term and transactional business, and improved product mix. According to Carpenter, these factors enabled SAO to deliver its strongest quarterly operating performance to date. Management Observations "The third quarter of fiscal year 2026 represents yet another record setting quarter." said Tony R. Thene, Chairman and CEO of Carpenter Technology in a written statement. "Increasing operating income 20 percent sequentially, over what was a record quarter in a market that is accelerating, speaks to our focus on industry leading execution. The profitability improvement was accompanied by meaningful cash generation, reflecting higher earnings and continued discipline in working capital management." Thene observed that looking ahead, demand in the company's Aerospace and Defense end-use market continues to accelerate as customers gain confidence in higher build rates. As a result, Thene commented Carpenter saw sequential growth in bookings for the commercial aerospace structural sub-market during the quarter. He also pointed out structural demand is closely tied to new production activity and is a clear indication of growing confidence in the aerospace supply chain. And as customers prioritize security of supply for these critical applications, Thene said Carpenter continues to advance long-term agreements that support volume visibility and pricing consistency, reinforcing its outlook for sustained growth. The company Increased its adjusted free cash flow outlook to approximately $350 million in fiscal year 2026, and executed $57.2 million in share repurchases against a $400.0 million share repurchase program. Thene noted. Thene announced the company was raising its operating income and adjusted free cash flow expectations for fiscal year 2026. He projected operating income to be in the range of $700 million to $705 million, and adjusted free cash flow to be approximately $350 million. Thene continued to say, "Carpenter Technology just delivered record earnings at a time when the Aerospace and Defense end-use market is at the beginning of the growth cycle. With demand accelerating, we believe Carpenter Technology is well positioned to deliver sustained performance and continue to generate long-term value." Third Quarter Operating Results Carpenter reported net sales for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 were $811.5 million, compared with $727.0 million in the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, an increase of 12 %. Net sales excluding surcharge were $655.6 million for the current quarter, an increase of $58.6 million from the same period a year ago. Operating income for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 was $186.5 million compared to operating income of $137.8 million in the prior year period. Earnings per diluted share for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 were $2.77 compared to earnings of $1.88 per diluted share in the prior year third quarter. Cash provided from operating activities in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, Carpenter reported, was $193.5 million, compared to $74.2 million in the same quarter last year. Adjusted free cash flow in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 was $124.8 million, compared to $34.0 million in the same quarter last year. Carpenter explained that the increase in operating cash flow in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 reflects higher earnings and improvements in working capital. The improvement in adjusted free cash flow reflects higher operating cash flow partially offset by increased capital expenditures compared to the prior year period, namely from its brownfield expansion. Capital expenditure was $68.7 million in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 compared to $40.2 million in the same quarter last year. The company reported total liquidity, including cash and available revolver balance, was $793.8 million at the end of the third quarter of fiscal year 2026. This consisted of $294.8 million cash and $499.0 million of available borrowings under the company's credit facility.
