Disney CEO calls parks a "big surprise" as Comcast ends three-month NFL blackout

Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro told CNBC on 14 August that the company's parks division was a "big surprise" last quarter in his first interview since succeeding Bob Iger in March 2026. Disney posted 28% earnings growth with strong results across parks and streaming. Days earlier, on 11 August, Disney and Comcast reached a deal ending a months-long blackout of NFL Network and NFL RedZone on Comcast's Xfinity cable service. The blackout began in late April after ESPN absorbed NFL Media assets and the companies failed to reach new terms, leaving roughly 11 million Xfinity subscribers without access. Financial terms of the Comcast deal were not disclosed. Disney's stock remains down more than 8% over the past 12 months, and the company has cut nearly 1,000 jobs since D'Amaro took over.

Comcast adds free motion sensing to millions of routers, but may share your data with third parties

Comcast has introduced Wi-Fi Motion, a free feature that transforms newer Xfinity gateways into motion sensors. The technology detects interruptions to Wi-Fi signals and sends notifications through the Xfinity app when activity is detected inside homes. The opt-in feature works with XB7 and newer gateway models, offering basic home security monitoring. However, enabling it comes with privacy implications. According to Comcast's support page, the company may disclose information generated by Wi-Fi Motion to third parties without notice in connection with law enforcement investigations, legal proceedings, court orders, or subpoenas. The feature was first reported by The Verge. Customers can activate or deactivate Wi-Fi Motion through the Xfinity app, giving them control over whether to use the motion detection capability.

Comcast launches Xfinity Shield security platform to retain broadband customers

Comcast is expanding its Xfinity home security offerings with a new platform called Xfinity Shield, combining Wi-Fi-based protection with cybersecurity and family controls. The service is available at no additional cost for Xfinity internet customers, whilst a $15-a-month option includes an indoor camera, door and window sensor, cloud video storage and 24/7 urgent response. The platform aims to deepen customer engagement as Comcast faces pressure to retain subscribers in a competitive market. The company said the average Xfinity customer now connects 36 devices to Wi-Fi, whilst its network identifies and blocks an average of 30 million threats daily. Xfinity Shield integrates cybersecurity, Wi-Fi Motion and family controls within the Xfinity app, using AI capabilities to support the service.
