About the company

What Ecocem does: Ecocem develops and provides high-performance cement technology and related products and services that help lower carbon emissions in cement and construction. How its product works: its technology replaces a portion of traditional cement components with lower-emission materials and processes, so the cement manufacturing footprint is cut by about half. How it differs from competitors: Ecocem operates as an independent company with a dedicated innovation centre and multiple European manufacturing facilities, enabling cost-effective decarbonization at scale and a clear focus on reducing CO2 in cement. What its goal is: to help the cement industry decarbonize by 50% by 2030 and contribute to a more sustainable future.

What believers are saying

  • April 2025 EIC Pathfinder awarded Ecocem €4 million for slag-based cement research.
  • May 2026 Ecocem won Construct Innovate funding with Cairn, UCD, and Kilsaran.
  • Tata Steel IJmuiden signed an Ecocem MoU in May 2026, widening slag feedstock access.

What critics are saying

  • Dunkirk’s €50 million ACT line still targets late-2026 startup, risking commissioning slippage.
  • Ecocem depends on CB Green, French subsidies, and Green Loan financing for scale-up.
  • Holcim, Heidelberg Materials, and Cemex can outspend Ecocem; regulatory setbacks would crush ACT adoption.

What makes Ecocem unique

  • Ecocem’s ACT technology targets up to 70% lower CO2 than conventional cement.
  • Ecocem pairs R&D with industrial assets: Dunkirk, France, plus four European facilities.
  • Ecocem invested 2% of turnover into R&D, sustaining a deep materials science edge.
