- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
- Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program, certification as a CMA, CCMA, or RMA, or eligibility to take the CMA or RMA examination with certification obtained within six months of hire is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
- Knowledge of clinical skills required for medical assistant certification or registration is required.

- The role requires sustained alertness and concentration for computer-based and repetitive detailed work, considerable standing or walking, lifting objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assisting with heavier tasks such as lifting and moving patients.
- Prepare patients for examinations, including conducting assessments, obtaining histories and vital signs, reconciling medications, and performing routine hearing, vision, and other testing.
- Record pertinent information accurately in patient charts and maintain documentation standards.
- Review charts before appointments to ensure that required requests and documents are in place.
- Administer treatments as requested by the physician.
- Obtain specimens for urine testing and phlebotomy.
- Perform laboratory tests as directed by the physician.
- Set up and assist physicians with procedures such as laceration repair and Pap or pelvic examinations.
- Schedule outside patient tests and procedures, including x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging.
- Prepare patients for tests and procedures by providing appropriate instructions.
- Coordinate admissions and referrals and call in prescriptions.
- Stock examination rooms and conduct daily supply inventories, reporting items that need to be ordered.
- Assist with appointment scheduling in the electronic medical record system.
- Screen calls and determine urgency, the need for an appointment, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
- Assist with completing patient forms, including workers' compensation and disability forms.
- Attend required staff and educational meetings.
- Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.
- Provide general nursing functions, clinical information, and support to providers under provider direction.
- Educate patients and families about medications, treatments, care, and referrals.
- Electronic medical record experience is highly desirable.
