Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science field is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or an equivalent organization is required.
  • The candidate must qualify as a General Supervisor under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments guidelines.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for assigned roles.
  • At least five years of experience in hematology, chemistry, blood banking, coagulation, urinalysis, serology, immunology, and/or microbiology is required.
  • The candidate must understand computers and be competent in using computers and basic software programs.
Responsibilities
  • Lead daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory, including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Molecular, and Urinalysis sections.
  • Assist the Manager or Director with their duties and establish and direct the laboratory's short- and long-term vision, values, and goals.
  • Manage the department's quality assurance, education, proficiency testing, competency validation, safety, laboratory information services, and other administrative functions.
  • Supervise Medical Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and other staff as needed.
  • Train, lead, coach, and mentor staff; schedule staff; and complete weekly timecard management.
  • Hire, monitor, coach, and provide disciplinary action to staff.
  • Manage performance, perform employee evaluations, and oversee staff development.
  • Evaluate, instruct, and assist in all laboratory sections.
  • Monitor and report on departmental goals and metrics.
  • Collaborate with other departments to create systems and resolve issues affecting patient-care delivery.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures through daily duties.
  • Participate in strategic decisions affecting laboratory operations.
  • Handle problems in assigned areas and take and document corrective action according to guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the management team to update procedures and policies for staff.
  • Collaborate with the management team to enhance customer-service activities, follow-ups, and service recovery.
  • Manage the department's quality assurance program in collaboration with Laboratory Quality Assurance.
  • Ensure the department meets laboratory accreditation and licensure standards for the State of Arizona, the College of American Pathologists, DNV, and other agencies.
  • Maintain excellent patient care.
  • Collaborate with other departments to resolve operational concerns and issues.
  • Fulfill the lead technologist role as needed to support quality assurance activities.
  • Report safety-related incidents through the NAH reporting tool, attend safety training, work safely, and monitor the work environment for safety issues.
  • Comply with state and federal regulations, statutes, and company policies affecting the area of responsibility.
  • Ensure required certifications and licenses remain current and valid before expiration.
  • Complete mandatory company modules and job-specific training within the specified time frame.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least three years of clinical laboratory managerial experience in an acute-care facility is preferred.
