S&P 500 Q3 profits seen surging 31% as AI giants drive nearly two-thirds of growth

Analysts expect S&P 500 earnings to jump about 31% in the third quarter from a year earlier, with technology and AI-focused companies such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta Platforms driving nearly two-thirds of the rise. Energy companies are projected to post a roughly 115% profit increase, according to Reuters. Higher oil prices amid the US-Israeli war with Iran pushed American crude about 30% higher during the quarter. Growth looks weaker elsewhere. Consumer staples and real estate are expected to report the slowest year-over-year gains. Second-quarter earnings rose nearly 54%, the strongest growth since 2021, according to LSEG. Excluding mark-to-market gains at Alphabet and Amazon, growth was about 35%. Investors worry about the wider market if the AI boom slows.

Chip stocks drag Nasdaq down 1.25% as crude prices surge on Middle East tensions

US stock markets closed mixed on Thursday as surging crude oil prices and falling semiconductor stocks weighed on investor sentiment. The Nasdaq dropped 1.25%, whilst the S&P 500 fell 0.47%. The Dow Jones posted a marginal 0.10% gain. Oil prices jumped over 3.6% following supply concerns from attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and reduced US output due to hurricanes. The rising prices have stoked inflation fears, with markets pricing in a 69.2% probability of a December interest rate hike. Chipmakers fell 3.4% after reports that OpenAI's revenues were $20 billion below previous guidance. Broadcom dropped 4.4% and Oracle declined 5.5% amid concerns about technology companies' debt issuance.

S&P Global launches risk tool for $10B blockchain lending market

S&P Global Ratings has launched its Vault Risk Assessment (VRA), a tool designed to evaluate impairment risks in blockchain-based lending vaults. The move targets a market that grew from $1.5 billion in deposits in September 2024 to approximately $10 billion by September 2026. The VRA assesses six risk factors: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. It provides forward-looking analysis but does not rate creditworthiness or yield attractiveness in traditional terms. Digital asset vaults pool investor deposits and deploy them on blockchain according to defined strategies, operating similarly to managed fixed income funds. The framework aims to help institutions strengthen investment governance and vault selection as digital assets become more institutionalised. S&P Global will publish initial assessments in future announcements, though no specific timeline or vault list was provided.
