Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or Doctor of Philosophy degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, welding engineering, metallurgical engineering, physics, or a related field is required.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in additive manufacturing, metal processing, powder metallurgy, laser processing, welding, or a closely related field is required.
  • Experience with at least one relevant process area, such as laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, wire arc additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, laser processing, welding, or metal additive manufacturing post-processing, is required.
  • Strong hands-on engineering ability and comfort working in a laboratory, shop, or manufacturing environment are required.
  • The ability to execute experiments, analyze results, troubleshoot problems, and communicate findings clearly is required.
  • Strong technical documentation skills, including build notes, test plans, process updates, and experimental summaries, are required.
  • High ownership, attention to detail, and comfort working in a fast-moving startup environment are required.
Responsibilities
  • Support laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and related metal additive manufacturing experiments for carbon nanomaterial-infused aluminum and copper systems.
  • Prepare builds, define build layouts, support orientation and support strategy, and help execute design-for-additive-manufacturing decisions.
  • Develop and refine print parameters, scan strategies, thermal management approaches, and process recipes.
  • Support powder and feedstock handling, build setup, machine operation, sample removal, post-processing, and documentation.
  • Help diagnose print defects including porosity, cracking, distortion, poor bonding, surface quality issues, and inconsistent build outcomes.
  • Partner with nanomaterials, process, and testing teams to connect print parameters to electrical, thermal, mechanical, and microstructural performance.
  • Help build and maintain fixture designs, computer-aided design files, build records, process travelers, test plans, and experiment summaries.
  • Support design-of-experiments-style experimentation, repeatability studies, and root-cause investigations.
  • Work with vendors, machine shops, external laboratories, and equipment suppliers as needed to keep experiments and builds moving.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with laser powder bed fusion or directed energy deposition metal additive manufacturing, or similar processes such as wire arc additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with aluminum, copper, conductors, metal matrix composites, or non-standard material systems.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing build preparation tools, computer-aided design, slicing, support generation, scan strategy setup, or print simulation.
  • Experience with powder handling, feedstock preparation, post-processing, sample preparation, or materials characterization.
  • Familiarity with design of experiments, statistical analysis, root-cause analysis, or process optimization.
  • Experience working in a startup, research laboratory, advanced manufacturing team, or hardware development environment.

What believers are saying

  • TechCrunch said Arcturus could halve grid electrical losses, unlocking more capacity.
  • Seed capital reached $8 million on June 30, 2026, funding hiring and scale-up.
  • AI data centers and electrification demand favors higher-conductivity, lower-heat materials now.

What critics are saying

  • Arcturus still has only prototypes; manufacturing scale-up starts after the June 2026 seed.
  • Large incumbents and dozens of carbon-nanomaterial rivals can copy performance claims quickly.
  • If customers reject its materials qualification process, Arcturus dies before commercialization.

What makes Arcturus unique

  • Arcturus sells drop-in carbon-nanomaterial metals for copper and aluminum conductors.
  • Its proprietary laser process targets motors, heat sinks, buses, and grid infrastructure.
  • Initialized, Toyota Ventures, and Breakthrough Energy Discovery backed the June 2026 launch.
