About the job

Requirements
  • A college or university degree in a related field is required.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through 2–5 years of work experience in a related job discipline are required.
Responsibilities
  • Work with emerging technologies and user requirements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing to build and evaluate innovative solutions for scientific work.
  • Develop an artificial-intelligence-based conversational assistant for computer science testbed users, including planning and provisioning agents with checks for resource limits, timing, and hardware compatibility; integrating large language models running on open academic hardware through standard tool interfaces; and creating validation benchmark suites and retrieval pipelines to organize documentation, logs, and help desk tickets into a searchable knowledge base.
  • Build and operate research infrastructure for projects such as Chameleon by designing and building solutions based on technologies such as artificial intelligence agent frameworks, large-language-model-integrated tooling, and hardware accelerators; extending open-source systems and tools such as OpenStack; developing features; managing upgrades and maintenance; and implementing security controls.
  • Work directly with users to identify requirements, solve problems, and troubleshoot issues, including participating in user studies and iterative evaluation of artificial-intelligence-assisted tools.
  • Collaborate with science researchers nationwide as part of a large supercomputing center and academic institution.
  • Contribute to papers as part of a research team that regularly publishes in academic venues.
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve day-to-day technical problems using standard procedures.
  • Work with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements for development programs and design applications that meet university and business requirements with moderate guidance.
  • Test code on components and ensure appropriate implementation standards are met.
  • Evaluate design alternatives for development cost and solutions using various methods.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer-related field is preferred.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as a Service cloud systems, such as OpenStack or Amazon Web Services, and relevant technologies, acquired through work, coursework, or projects.
  • Programming experience with Python.
  • Demonstrated contributions to open-source software.
  • Experience with distributed systems, performance analysis, and resource or data management systems.
  • Experience with remote working and associated practices.
  • Knowledge of Unix or Linux.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as Xen or KVM, and/or containers such as Docker.
  • Experience with system administration technologies such as Ceph and MariaDB, and DevOps and continuous integration and continuous delivery tools such as Jenkins and Ansible.
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as React and Vue, web portal development, Jupyter notebook environments, and interactive scientific interfaces.
  • Experience with large language models, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, or artificial intelligence agent frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes occasional late-night or weekend hours.
  • Ability to identify similar or complementary commercial or academic solutions and read scientific literature to fill knowledge gaps.
  • Interest in research and working on challenges without obvious solutions.
