About the job

Requirements
  • Hold a current Registered Nurse license issued by the state where services will be provided, or a current multistate Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Alternatively, hold a current temporary or graduate Registered Nurse permit where required by the state board. State-specific provisions include recent nursing-school graduation and obtaining a permanent license within 90 days of graduation in Maryland; current licensure for Ohio nurses; a current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse temporary permit with permanent licensure before the permit expires; or a current West Virginia Registered Nurse graduate permit with permanent licensure before the permit expires. Temporary permits are valid only in the issuing state and are not multistate licenses.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Demonstrate novice-level clinical knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care and assess and interpret patient data.
  • Meet the physical demands of heavy/hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more.
  • Use lift equipment or other patient-handling aids as indicated by the patient profile and applicable safe patient handling algorithms; manually lifting patients should be minimized, and safe patient handling is limited to 35 pounds.
  • Work closely with others, including in protracted or irregular hours, around biohazards and infectious diseases, with or near deceased persons, with hands in water, and around electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients in an inpatient hospital setting.
  • Deliver direct patient care during an assigned shift using the nursing process and within the role’s scope of practice.
  • Assume responsibility, use appropriate authority, and accept accountability for patient care.
  • Use competent clinical practice and critical thinking to deliver patient care efficiently with other health care providers and make efficient use of resources.
  • Make appropriate clinical decisions and consult expert peers or management as applicable.
  • Identify commonly occurring risks to patient health and initiate actions to correct, reduce, or prevent them.
  • Provide coordinated, comprehensive patient care, including assessment, expected outcomes, nursing interventions, and evaluation, within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Coordinate patient-care tasks with patients and families within safe-practice guidelines; delegate tasks to assigned personnel and follow up on completion and patient response.
  • Use independent nursing judgment and accept accountability for care provided by self and by health care providers to whom care is delegated.
  • Apply standards of care and practice, use resources effectively, and evaluate patient responses.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, or research findings; seek assistance or credible resources when unable to perform safely and independently.
  • Evaluate patient responses to tasks performed and delegated, including Patient Profile Assessment for safe patient handling and mobility.
  • Set and revise priorities for direct and indirect patient-care activities based on patient acuity and available resources; update the daily care plan with appropriate safe patient handling algorithms.
  • Use established patient-care support systems, including documentation, communication, and information systems.
  • Support the development of others, engage in mentoring and networking to promote professional development, and help integrate staff and students into the health care team and the unit’s mission, values, and vision.
  • Promote trusting relationships and open, honest communication at the unit level.
  • Exchange information relevant to specific patient assignments and interact with health care team members to meet patient-care needs.
  • Participate in performance-improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation when required by the facility, through computer-based learning, training, in-services, or competency validation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
