About the company

Twilio builds cloud software that lets businesses add text messages, phone calls, email, and identity checks to their own apps and websites through code their developers write. In 2011, Uber moved its rider texts to Twilio, which later let the ride app expand abroad without signing deals with each country's phone carriers. Developers call Twilio's programming interfaces to send texts and WhatsApp messages, run calls that people or AI voice agents answer, send email through its SendGrid service, and confirm logins with one-time codes. Customers pay mostly per message, call minute, or check, plus subscriptions for email. Twilio was founded in 2008 and is based in San Francisco.

What believers are saying

  • Growth is speeding up: underlying sales rose 17% in the June 2026 quarter, and Twilio raised its 2026 forecast twice.
  • Stock grants nearly doubled: Twilio shares rose 94% from January to early October 2026.
  • AI chatbot makers become big accounts: two reached $6 million and $9 million in yearly Twilio spending by August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Growth isn't adding jobs: headcount slipped from 5,587 in December 2025 to 5,492 in June 2026 as sales rose 22%.
  • Carrier fees squeeze small customers: Twilio expects to pass on about $250 million in extra U.S. carrier charges in 2026.

  • Expect to work remotely: all 137 jobs Twilio listed in October 2026 were remote, spread across 13 countries.

Twilio shares soar 167% in a year but 40x cash flow multiple hinges on AI demand staying strong

Twilio's stock has surged 167% over the past year, significantly outpacing the S&P 500's 18% gain. The cloud communications provider now trades at 39.7 times operating cash flow, compared to 14.5 times for the broader market. The company raised its 2026 organic revenue growth forecast to 13% to 13.5% in August, up from 9.5% to 10.5% previously, citing strong AI customer demand. Second-quarter organic revenue grew 17% year-over-year. However, management expects third-quarter organic growth to slow to 11% to 12%. The company also warned of tougher comparisons ahead in Voice and software add-ons. Twilio's upcoming third-quarter results will test whether the premium valuation is justified, as investors are betting on continued acceleration despite increasingly difficult year-over-year comparisons.

Salesforce vs Twilio: AI-powered customer engagement platforms battle for market share

Salesforce and Twilio are pursuing different strategies to capitalise on growing demand for AI-powered customer engagement. Salesforce is expanding beyond traditional CRM with Customer 360, Data 360, Slack, and Agentforce. Twilio focuses on communications infrastructure connecting businesses, customers, and AI agents. Salesforce reported encouraging AI metrics in its second quarter of fiscal 2027. Agentforce annual recurring revenues surpassed $1.5 billion, jumping over 240% year over year. Combined AI and Data ARR, including Agentforce, Data 360, and Informatica Cloud, increased 210% to $3.9 billion. However, overall revenue growth remains slower. Second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenues increased 11% to $11.3 billion. The company reported 102.7% growth in non-GAAP earnings per share to $5.90, though this benefited from gains on strategic investments, including its stake in Anthropic.

Twilio raises $150M, integrates AI-music verification, and appoints new CEO

Twilio has announced three strategic moves to strengthen its position in AI-powered communications. The company is partnering with the Sonic Intelligence Academy to integrate AI-music verification into its platform, enabling developers to check whether audio content is AI-generated. This addresses growing demand for content authenticity as regulators push for provenance tools. Twilio raised $150 million in new funding to accelerate development of AI-enhanced APIs, expand globally, and improve infrastructure resilience. The capital will support features like real-time language translation and sentiment analysis. The firm also appointed Maya Patel as CEO. Patel brings 15 years of experience from IBM, Amazon Web Services, and Accenture, with expertise in AI ethics and scaling global platforms in regulated industries.

Twilio brings AI customer engagement tools to Latin America amid fierce competition

Twilio has unveiled new AI-powered customer engagement platform capabilities for Latin America, aiming to address persistent communication challenges in customer service.
