About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least five years of performance engineering and testing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing workload models and executing performance test campaigns against distributed, multi-tier systems using tools such as JMeter, Gatling, k6, or LoadRunner.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing performance problems in latency-sensitive systems using profilers and system tooling such as perf, eBPF/bpftrace, async-profiler, JFR, flame graphs, or Intel VTune.
  • A rigorous statistical approach to measurement, including understanding why averages can mislead, how coordinated omission distorts results, and how to build tests that produce defensible numbers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain a latency distribution to kernel engineers and business stakeholders.
  • Deep working knowledge in at least two of the following, with working familiarity across the rest: Linux internals related to performance, including scheduling, memory management, interrupt affinity, kernel and network tuning; JVM internals, including the Java memory model, JIT behavior, escape analysis, GC algorithms and pause characteristics (G1, ZGC, Shenandoah), and off-heap memory management; networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, UDP multicast, packet capture and analysis, and measurement of network-induced latency and loss.
Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end performance validation for assigned areas of the derivatives trading platform, including order entry, matching engine, and market data distribution paths.
  • Design and execute load, stress, and capacity test suites against pre-production and production-like environments.
  • Profile pre-production services to identify bottlenecks across CPU, memory, I/O, threading, garbage collection, network, and database layers, and partner with development teams to resolve findings before release.
  • Establish and maintain production performance baselines and proactively identify degradation and emerging risk.
  • Investigate latency and capacity events in production, producing formal root cause analyses and corrective action plans.
  • Contribute to capacity planning and infrastructure sizing recommendations grounded in measured behavior and growth projections.
  • Plan and execute non-functional testing for resiliency, failover, scalability, and capacity validation, expected to comprise roughly 20% of the role.
  • Document methodology, results, and findings for internal engineering audiences and, where applicable, audit and regulatory review.
  • Contribute to the team's shared tooling, harnesses, and measurement practice.
  • Use AI tooling to draft workload models and test scaffolding from production metrics, SLAs, and prior incidents; accelerate analysis of profiler output, garbage collection logs, traces, and packet captures; and shorten first-pass root cause analysis and produce engineering- and audit-ready write-ups.
  • Validate AI-generated results and remain accountable for workload-model statistical soundness, bottleneck identification, stated root cause, and corrective actions.
  • Work onsite in the Atlanta office five days per week; occasional weekend work to support major platform releases is infrequent and scheduled in advance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Java, C++, or Python.
  • Applied experience using AI coding agents in a routine performance or development workflow, including test-script authoring, log and metric analysis, or root cause analysis drafting; hands-on experience with Claude Code or a comparable agent, including agent skills or MCP servers connecting agents to APM platforms, logs, or test harnesses, is a plus.
  • Experience with low-latency or high-throughput systems, ideally in financial services, trading, or market data.
  • Experience with kernel-bypass and accelerated networking such as Solarflare/Onload, DPDK, RDMA, or FPGA-assisted paths.
  • Experience with hardware and colocation tuning, including BIOS/firmware configuration, C-state and frequency management, PTP/PPS time synchronization, and hardware timestamping.
  • Experience with APM platforms such as Dynatrace, AppDynamics, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Experience with chaos engineering, resiliency testing, or disaster recovery validation.

About the company

I

Intercontinental Exchange

View

Intercontinental Exchange runs financial marketplaces, clearing houses and data services for banks, investors and businesses that trade or finance assets. Its New York Stock Exchange lets companies raise capital and gives investors a place to buy and sell listed shares. ICE also sells market pricing and analytics, while its mortgage software supports lenders from loan applications through closing and servicing. Trading fees, listing fees and subscriptions pay for these services, and clearing houses manage the risk that one side of a trade fails to pay. Founded in 2000 to digitize energy trading, Intercontinental Exchange is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

What believers are saying

  • Subscriptions support stability: ICE reported 51% recurring net revenue for 2025 in February 2026.
  • Employees get matched charitable giving: ICE matches eligible donations dollar for dollar up to $5,000 yearly.
  • Mortgage customers stay: Wells Fargo renewed its ICE servicing agreement in September 2026 after more than 35 years.

What critics are saying

  • Housing slowdowns hit mortgage fees: ICE earns transaction revenue per processed loan, and reduced lending has hurt receipts.
  • Clearing puts ICE capital at risk: over $200 million of its own money backs protection against member defaults.
  • Office attendance matters for data leaders: ICE's exchange content strategy manager role is designated in-office across four US locations.

What makes Intercontinental Exchange unique

  • Brent settlement follows physical oil: ICE uses published North Sea cargo trades and assessments to set its final price.
  • ICE prices assets without a trade: independent securities evaluations combine comparable quotes, yield curves and valuation models.
  • Mortgage ownership records run through ICE: its MERS system and electronic registry connect lenders beyond loan origination.
