Requirements
  • Hands-on experience operating metal laser powder bed fusion machines such as EOS, Nikon SLM, Aconity3D, Renishaw, Velo3D, 3D Systems, or similar; large-format experience is a plus.
  • Direct experience with powder handling, sieving, depowdering, and the personal protective equipment and cleanliness discipline required for metal powder operations.
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining industrial equipment.
  • Experience with part post-processing, including build plate removal, support removal, hand finishing, or heat treatment.
  • Working proficiency with metrology tools and engineering drawings; familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is a plus.
  • Ability to document observations and communicate clearly with engineers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous research and development environment where procedures are still being developed.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and handle sensitive components carefully.
  • Ability to perform hands-on shop-floor work while standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including powered air-purifying respirators or respirators, for powder operations.
  • Ability to work around high-temperature components, compressed gases, and metal powders with appropriate controls.
  • Must satisfy the applicable U.S. Government aerospace technology export-control eligibility requirements under ITAR and EAR.
Responsibilities
  • Operate metal laser powder bed fusion machines end to end, including powder loading, plate leveling, build setup, monitoring, machine flips, and depowdering.
  • Process powder through sieving, recovery, reuse tracking, lot management, personal protective equipment, and environmental controls.
  • Perform post-processing, including cutting parts from build plates using wire electrical discharge machining, support removal, heat treatment, hand finishing, and tumbling.
  • Measure and verify parts with calipers, micrometers, and optical microscopes against engineering drawings.
  • Perform routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and first-line troubleshooting on machines, and work directly with vendors when needed.
  • Monitor every build for anomalies, document observations, and close the feedback loop with engineering.
  • Manage consumables and powder inventory with full traceability.
  • Operate wax, ceramic, and polymer printing and investment-casting processes in the research and development lab.
  • Help build and organize the laboratory, including layout, tooling, workflow, and work instructions.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with high-temperature nickel superalloys or other difficult-to-print materials.
  • Experience or knowledge of wire electrical discharge machining, computer numerical control machining, hot isostatic pressing, or electropolishing.
  • Experience with non-metal additive manufacturing, including stereolithography, material extrusion, or material jetting, or with investment casting, wax, and ceramic printing.
  • Basic exposure to computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing or build-preparation software such as Magics, 3DXpert, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360.
  • Experience helping establish or organize a new laboratory or production area.
  • Background in aerospace, medical, or another regulated manufacturing environment, including AS9100 or ISO environments.

The largest battery-electric plane ever made has flown for the first time. Heart Aerospace's X1 demonstrator flew for 27 minutes on $5 of electricity Heart Aerospace has announced the successful first flight of its prototype all-electric aircraft, the X1 demonstrator. X1 took off from Plattsburgh International Airport in Upstate New York and flew for 27 minutes, reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet, running entirely on its batteries. Heart added the flight, including takeoff and landing, consumed less than $5 worth of electricity, a useful selling point given the price of fuel. It has already earned praise from executives at United Airlines and Air Canada, who are interested in adding electric planes to its fleets. If Heart is successful, the X1 will be followed by the ES-30, a fixed-wing 30-seat hybrid model designed to service regional airports. The company's hope is that its planes can offer a far cheaper service for hopper flights currently operated by turboprop planes like the Embraer ERJ. It is aiming for an all-electric range of 125 miles, with that figure climbing to 500 miles with the hybrid engine. Heart's broader pitch is that it won't just be in the cheaper cost of electricity versus jet fuel that will make its plane affordable. Naturally, the cheaper maintenance and operation cost of electric motors, their better reliability will add to the balance sheet. Of more concern, perhaps, is Heart's belief that the ES-30, while operated by a single pilot initially, will enable autonomous service in the future. Right now, the company is aiming for the ES-30 to enter service by 2031, a date Engadget, Inc.'ll only say is "ambitious" by most plane development standards. The next decade does appear to be one in which a number of aviation startups are looking to offer their vision for the future of flight. Heart will be jostling for space alongside Boom Supersonic, Harbour Air, ZeroAvia, and Rolls-Royce. But, as Engadget, Inc. opined back in 2021, the future of electric flight is entirely dependent on batteries getting a lot denser and lighter compared to their current-day equivalents.

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking to repeal the outright ban on supersonic aviation in favor of regulations on noise restraint for supersonic travel. The FAA banned supersonic flights back in 1973 following public pushback over noise complaints. But recently, a company called Boom Supersonic is working on plane technology that would reduce noise when breaking the sound barrier. The aim is to use this technology for commercial flights.
