About the company

Expedia Group runs online travel brands such as Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, where people book hotels, vacation homes, flights, and rental cars, and it supplies the same travel to other companies. Its Expedia site was one of the first online travel agencies, letting people compare and book flights and hotels on the web without calling a travel agent. Travelers search and pay through its apps and websites, while partners such as airlines and banks plug its hotel and flight listings into their own booking sites. Expedia earns commissions and markups on bookings and sells advertising to hotels and other travel companies. It began in 1996 as a division of Microsoft and is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • Selling through other companies drives growth: B2B bookings rose 21% in Q2 2026, versus 8% at Expedia's own sites.
  • Stock grants beat its biggest rival's: Expedia shares rose 27% in the year to October 2026, while Booking's fell 22%.
  • AI skills are in demand: Expedia's San Jose hub had about 100 of 300 seats open in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • AI agents threaten its middleman role: shares fell 7% on September 23, 2026, after Meta's Muse showed direct hotel booking.
  • Cuts keep coming: Expedia laid off 162 Seattle-area staff in January 2026 and filed in September to cut 58 more.
  • Booking books nearly three times as many stays: 325 million room nights in Q2 2026, versus Expedia's 111.5 million.

What makes Expedia Group unique

  • Tens of thousands of companies sell its trips: Expedia's B2B arm supplies 75,000 partners and 200,000 travel advisors.
  • Half the company builds software: about 8,000 of Expedia's 16,000 staff, including 5,000 engineers, work in product and technology.
  • Vrbo, its vacation-home brand, rents only whole homes: unlike Airbnb, it bans listings with living space shared with hosts.

Vrbo adds AI search and deferred payment option.

Vrbo adds AI search and deferred payment option. Reading Time: 2 minutes US: Expedia Group has expanded its use of artificial intelligence across Vrbo, introducing natural-language property search and an AI voice assistant alongside a forthcoming deferred-payment option. Vrbo's Natural Language Search allows travellers to describe the type of vacation rental they need in their own words instead of relying only on conventional filters. The technology is designed to understand more detailed group requirements, such as requests for a beachfront property with a well-equipped kitchen and outdoor gathering space. It can also explain why particular homes match the search. Natural-language search is available through Vrbo's US English website and app experience. Vrbo has also introduced an AI-powered voice assistant capable of responding to common support requests. Calls can be transferred to a human agent with the conversation history retained, reducing the need for travellers to repeat information. A Reserve Now, Pay Later option is due to launch on eligible properties, allowing guests to confirm a reservation with no payment taken at the time of booking. Travellers must provide a payment card and will pay the full cost closer to the stay. Expedia Group said the option would give group organisers more time to confirm attendees and collect contributions towards the booking. Vrbo's updated arrival experience will also bring check-in information, access codes, directions and house rules together within one section of the platform. The features form part of Expedia Group's autumn product release, which includes more than 30 additions across Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com. Expedia has introduced a conversational activity planner that recommends bookable activities based on the traveller's itinerary and preferences. Its Property Expert tool answers questions using listing information, guest reviews and reservation details. Hotels.com has expanded its AI comparison tool, allowing travellers to compare shortlisted properties through plain-language summaries and ask follow-up questions about their options. Shilpa Ranganathan, chief product officer at Expedia Group, said: "We're building AI-powered experiences across our brands that help travellers make informed decisions, give them flexibility and value and personalise every step of their trip." The Vrbo launch follows wider investment by major accommodation platforms in conversational search, which could change how vacation rentals are discovered by moving beyond fixed filters towards more detailed descriptions of guest needs. Highlights. * Vrbo has launched natural-language vacation rental search. * Travellers can describe detailed property and group requirements in their own words. * The search tool is available through Vrbo's US English website and app. * Vrbo has added an AI voice assistant with transfers to human support. * Reserve Now, Pay Later will allow eligible homes to be booked with no upfront payment. * Vrbo has also consolidated key arrival information within its platform. * The changes form part of more than 30 Expedia Group product updates.

Expedia Group launches Autonomous Onboarding, the first phase of its Autonomous Distribution roadmap

Expedia Group launches Autonomous Onboarding, the first phase of its Autonomous Distribution roadmap. 21/10/2026 by WiT Expedia Group has announced AUTONOMOUS ONBOARDING, which it says is a faster, simpler way for properties to join its global travel marketplace without leaving the connectivity software they already use. The company says properties can select Expedia Group as a distribution channel, accept their agreement and go live in less than 24 hours - without a separate onboarding workflow or duplicate data entry. Here are some key highlights: * Properties can join Expedia Group through their existing software and go live in under 24 hours. * The launch gives properties a simpler path to Expedia Group's consumer brands, B2B network and AI agentic bookings. * Five connectivity partners across multiple markets shaped the experience in pilot: HotelRunner, Yanolja Cloud Solutions, RoomCloud, RateGain and Eviivo. Expedia Group adds that work that once required manual setup now happens automatically. The Group's technology reaches into the property's existing software and transfers the critical data needed to set up the hotel, including room types, rates and rate plans, photos, amenities, payment setups, availability, and other property details. That data is then validated by Expedia Group, so the property can go live quickly. Webintravel spoke to Chris Hodges, VP of Global Connectivity & Partner Solutions, Expedia Group about the workflow of Autonomous Onboarding and the importance of agility in today's hospitality industry. Watch the full interview here: Plug into Expedia Group's global demand. Once live, properties can reach travelers through Expedia Group's multiple consumer brands, its B2B distribution network of more than 75,000 partners and 200,000 travel advisors, and its emerging AI-powered travel partnerships. Expedia Group's platform saw more than one billion average monthly searches and recorded more than 415 million booked room nights in 2025, giving properties access to significant global demand. Built with software providers. Ahead of the launch, Expedia Group partnered with five pilot providers to bring Autonomous Onboarding to life: HotelRunner, Yanolja Cloud Solutions, RoomCloud, RateGain and Eviivo. "Adding a new source of demand should not add a new layer of work," said Hodges, who also wrote a more detailed post about the process here. "Autonomous Onboarding makes it much easier for properties to join Expedia Group through the technology they already use. It is an important first step in our broader vision for AUTONOMOUS DISTRIBUTION, where partners can spend less time on manual processes and more time growing their business." The journey ahead. Autonomous Onboarding is the first phase of Expedia Group's Autonomous Distribution journey. Beginning with onboarding, the longer-term vision is to make the full distribution lifecycle simpler and more intelligent, extending into how partners manage and, over time, optimize their business.
