Responsibilities
  • Learn and develop skills and competencies through assigned duties and through use of systems, software, and programs.
  • Research and analyze information within Claims, Loss Control, or Underwriting.
  • Work on assigned special projects, compute and provide reports, attend company meetings, and provide feedback to supervisors.
  • Work with internal departments to resolve problems and maintain company relations.
  • Perform assigned Claims training tasks and learn key aspects of the company.
  • Verify workers' compensation coverage, determine whether reported injuries are compensable, determine medical causal relationships, and manage and approve medical bill payments for non-indemnity and simple indemnity claims.
  • Apply claims principles, knowledge, and skills under the supervision of Claims Leadership.
  • Identify hazardous conditions and unsafe acts, review business processes and operations, and recommend safety best practices.
  • Research and analyze technical information, equipment specifications, legal standards, and losses, and write practical reports.
  • Train or present to customers and internal or external staff on loss prevention and safety topics.
  • Gather and communicate safety information for underwriting risk selection.
  • Maintain relationships with independent agents and address account loss-control reports, recommendations, questions, and concerns.
  • Learn to perform telephone, mail, and field audits; collect required data and documents; and calculate policyholder premium liability.
  • Learn applicable laws, regulations, state-specific requirements, automated systems, operations, processes, policies, terminology, and procedures.
  • Enter or research information in computer systems, review and process requests, and respond to internal and external customer inquiries.
  • Observe auditors and progress toward assisting with and conducting audits independently.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as answering telephones, faxing, filing, copying, mail distribution, and generating letters, forms, or reports.
  • Calculate, prepare, and develop premium quotations using corporate underwriting guidelines within the letter of authority.
  • Determine underwriting eligibility and develop pricing for new business, renewals, and endorsements.
  • Analyze prospective accounts for insurability and accept or reject them within the letter of authority.
  • Support agency relationships and develop new business and retention of existing business in an assigned territory or region.
  • Explain and emphasize workers' compensation insurance products and services to agents and policyholders.
  • Analyze accounts to determine exposure and proper pricing, review loss trends, and develop action plans to correct problem areas.
Desired Qualifications
  • Coursework in medical terminology is desired for Claims.
  • One year of relevant insurance-environment experience or knowledge of workers' compensation is desired.
  • Bilingual speaking, writing, or reading skills in English and Spanish are desired.
  • Progress toward or completion of industry-recognized professional designations such as Associate in Premium Auditing, Insurance Institute of America, Associate in Insurance, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, or Associate in Risk Management is highly preferred.
  • Agency management and marketing experience is preferred for Underwriting/Business Development.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to create and maintain mutually beneficial relationships are desired.
