About the company

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Starlink demand keeps compounding: subscribers doubled to 12 million in the year to June 2026.
  • Room to grow: SpaceX listed 2,693 open roles in October 2026, over a third of them for Starlink.
  • Rivals rent its AI supercomputers: Claude maker Anthropic agreed in May 2026 to pay SpaceX $1.25 billion a month.

What critics are saying

  • Stock grants swing hard: shares closed between $108 and $211 in the four months after the June 2026 IPO.
  • Expect long weeks: 1,724 of SpaceX's 2,693 job posts in October 2026 mention extended hours and weekend work.
  • AI spending outruns sales: SpaceX put $15.8 billion into AI data centers in the June 2026 quarter, double its revenue.

What makes SpaceX unique

  • SpaceX is the world's busiest launcher by far: its 165 orbital launches in 2025 were nearly double China's total.
  • Starlink carries the profits: it earned $1.7 billion in the June 2026 quarter, while rockets and AI lost $1.8 billion.
  • Elon Musk has the final say: super-voting shares give him about 82% of shareholder votes after the June 2026 IPO.

SpaceX books $561M gain on Boring Co. stake, lifting quarterly net income to $4B

SpaceX booked an unrealized investment gain of $561 million in the third quarter from its stake in Elon Musk's Boring Co., it said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Thursday. The gain made up more than half of SpaceX's "other income" and lifted net income to just over $4 billion. Boring Co. began inside SpaceX in 2017 and spun out a year later. Last month, it raised $3 billion at a $23 billion valuation, backed by the United Arab Emirates and longtime Musk supporters. Its only public tunnels are in Las Vegas. It also plans a Nashville project and more than 150 kilometres (93 miles) of tunnels in the UAE. SpaceX also bought $151 million of Tesla Megapack energy storage systems in the quarter.

Musk eyes 2028 Terafab chip output as SpaceX Q3 revenue jumps 161% to $14.58B

SpaceX chief executive officer Elon Musk said the company aims for volume chip production at its Terafab plant in the third or fourth quarter of 2028. He called the timeline an "aspiration" and "very aggressive." Speaking on the third-quarter earnings call, Musk said SpaceX hopes to have a test chip working around May or June next year at its research fab in Austin, Texas. He said it has "some significant potential breakthroughs in chip fabrication" but declined to elaborate: "Let's not give away the shop here." SpaceX reported third-quarter revenue of $14.58 billion, up 161% and above estimates of $12.94 billion. Earnings were 35 cents per share against expectations of 12 cents. Capital expenditures totalled $19.6 billion, and the company expects $35 billion to $40 billion in the fourth quarter.

SpaceX shares fall 9.1% on AI funding worries and Tesla merger uncertainty

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) shares fell 9.1% on Thursday, October 22, as concerns over AI funding and a possible Tesla merger weighed on the stock. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.2% and 2.6%, respectively. SpaceX's quarterly report showed revenue growth of 161% but capital spending of more than $16 billion. Management projected another $35 billion to $40 billion in the fourth quarter. With negative free cash flow, the company will likely need to borrow more, and higher oil prices could push borrowing costs up. Reuters reported that some people involved in the Tesla talks fear a merger endorsement by Elon Musk would bring unwanted scrutiny and delays. Others worry a deal would hurt SpaceX shareholders. The talks remain preliminary, with no terms set.

Google pays SpaceX $11B a year for xAI compute, raising concentration risks

Google is paying SpaceX $920 million a month, or $11 billion a year, to lease xAI's cloud infrastructure through 2029. The deal gives it continuous access to a cluster of roughly 110,000 Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs). Google held 15% of the global cloud market in the second quarter of 2026, behind Amazon Web Services at 28% and Microsoft Azure at 20%, according to Synergy Research Group. It could not expand fast enough to meet demand for Nvidia-powered computing. Buying the chips would have cost $3.3 billion to $4.4 billion, but Google would also have faced years of waiting for power connections, plus high running costs. Alphabet owns a 4%-5% stake in SpaceX. The risks: Google is funding a future cloud rival, and the cluster sits in centralised xAI facilities in Tennessee, where outages could hit many tenants.

Elon Musk lost $74 billion, bringing his net worth to $914.7 billion, as SpaceX shares sank nearly 9%. Investors weighed a $35 billion cash-flow gap and Musk's confirmation that SpaceX is considering a merger with Tesla. Tesla fell 2%, after it cut its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $20 billion from over $25 billion. Mark Zuckerberg lost $18 billion as Meta fell 8%. The company raised the low end of its capital spending forecast by $5 billion, to $135 billion to $145 billion. Jeff Bezos lost $11 billion as Amazon fell nearly 5%. Larry Page and Sergey Brin lost a combined $15 billion, and Michael Dell lost $12 billion as Dell Technologies dropped 7%.
