Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in an area related to Child Growth and Development and 3 years of relevant experience, including some supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of progressive work experience on the child life team with demonstrated job-related knowledge and proficiency are required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills are required.
  • The ability to collaborate with team members and families is required.
  • The ability to potentially work weekends and evenings based on practice need is required.
  • Certified Child Life Specialist Child Life Professional Certification upon hire is required.
  • Association of Child Life Professionals membership upon hire is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide evidence-based, developmentally appropriate child life interventions, including therapeutic play, preparation, and education, to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain for children.
  • Develop and deliver skilled child life services focused on the developmental, emotional, and psychosocial needs of the child.
  • Serve as a preceptor in onboarding newly hired team members by orienting them to day-to-day routines, procedures, and departmental and hospital policies.
  • Advocate and serve as an educational resource for the healthcare team.
  • Develop and deliver departmental educational opportunities within the department and with other medical disciplines.
  • Direct daily activities, oversee project work, conduct weekly conferences, evaluate student interns, and prepare complex care plans for student interns.
  • Prepare children and families for healthcare experiences by providing developmentally appropriate explanations and facilitating support through medical events.
  • Assess the coping responses and needs of children and families during healthcare experiences, review comprehensive information related to assigned patients daily, develop plans to address assessed needs, evaluate intervention effectiveness, and document assessments, plans, interventions, and evaluations in the medical record and verbally when appropriate.
  • Implement psychosocial and developmental care to meet the needs of the child, provide therapeutic play and other experiences that foster continued growth and development, encourage expression of feelings, and promote mastery and understanding of healthcare experiences.
  • Advocate for comprehensive school services in the hospital when appropriate.
  • Support children’s relationships with parents and other family members by involving parents in child life plans and providing individualized support for siblings and peers while considering cultural needs.
  • Communicate observations, assessments, and care recommendations effectively with healthcare team members.
  • Educate team members on the developmental needs of children and advocate for therapeutic, safe, and inviting spaces for children, youth, and families.
  • Lead and participate in supervision of child life interns, volunteers, students, and others participating in child life services, including selection, training, and placement.
  • Assist in coordinating child life program activities, community groups, special departmental programs, and assigned public-relations activities.
  • Participate in team meetings and orientation to department infrastructure, policies, protocols, and workflow.
  • Participate in in-service education, continuing education opportunities, and professional organizations.
  • Remain compliant with hospital and department policies, procedures, and team standards.
  • Oversee the collection, selection, and distribution of toys and equipment used in the program.
  • Monitor and maintain the use and condition of supplies, equipment, and materials needed to provide child life services.
  • Serve as a resource for assigned special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
