Requirements
- A college or university degree from an accredited school or college.
- Knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and training in a related job discipline.
- Current or eligible State of Illinois licensure/registration.
- Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office.
- Current certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult Nurse Practitioner, or Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or an equivalent certifying body.
- Current certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
- Current Basic Life Support certification.
- Clinical competency, effective leadership and teaching skills, and the ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
- Ability to interview patients and obtain medical information.
- Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
- Willingness, once licensed and as needed, to apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled-substance license and Drug Enforcement Administration number.
- Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through the University of Chicago Medical Center medical staff office before the start date.
- Proficiency in using computers.
- Ability to use computers extensively for four hours or more.
- Ability to assist patients transferring to and from chairs, wheelchairs, examination tables, and gurneys while following current lifting procedures.
- Ability to work with potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens, infectious material, and communicable diseases.
- Availability for a Monday-through-Friday schedule, with possible on-call and evening rotations.
- Ability to work in varied locations inside and outside the clinical setting, including other campus or offsite locations.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct primary health care to patients in collaboration with the consulting physician and multidisciplinary health team, including identifying, managing, and referring health problems.
- Manage straightforward to moderately complex medical problems and promote health and disease prevention in the Student Wellness Center.
- Collaborate with health professionals to provide holistic, integrated care for University of Chicago students.
- Conduct comprehensive physical examinations, gynecological assessments, and episodic health assessments, and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols.
- Take patient histories and conduct physical examinations; screen patients for possible hospital admission; make referrals; write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries; obtain psychosocial histories; and develop therapeutic relationships with patients.
- Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures, and explain their necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects to patients.
- Evaluate patient-care outcomes and initiate changes as appropriate.
- Participate in developing collaborative practice arrangements.
- Assume accountability for patient care by making clinical decisions, prescribing medications and treatments under delegated prescriptive authority, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable patient environment.
- Coordinate patient care by serving as a liaison among nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources.
- Select communication approaches to achieve desired patient-care outcomes.
- Pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development and participate in quality-assurance initiatives.
- Participate in community health education as needed.
- Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by the supervising physician as needed.
- Prepare statistical reports and analyses describing progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as needed.
- Teach students and residents techniques and procedures unique to the clinical setting as needed.
- Act as a clinical-skills resource for staff inside or outside the unit.
- Interpret assessments, treatments, outcomes, work and disability status, and screenings, and maintain clear and concise records in accordance with departmental requirements and applicable standards or laws.
- Analyze test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment.
- Counsel patients about therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
- Interpret patients' conditions and determine appropriate treatment, including ordering laboratory or imaging studies, discussing cases with the emergency physician, and referring patients to consultants.
- Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
- A Master's or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited school or college.
- Experience in primary care, urgent care, family medicine, women's health, or an equivalent ambulatory setting.
- One year of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse experience.
- New graduates with relevant nursing experience are considered.
- Teamwork, interactive communication, professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently.
- Strong organizational skills and demonstrated written, verbal, and analytical skills.
