Stephen Schwarzman and Pete Peterson founded Blackstone in 1985 with $200,000 each, opening on October 1 with $400,000 in capital. The name combines "Schwarz," meaning "black," and "Petro," meaning "stone." The firm rested on three pillars: a boutique advising on mergers and acquisitions, a leveraged buyout fund, and new ventures led by a "10 out of 10" person. Its 1988 asset management launch, led by Larry Fink, later grew into BlackRock. Early business was hard to win. None of more than 500 launch letters brought in work, as clients feared having to justify choosing a newcomer over the large financial houses they relied on. Blackstone had said it would raise $1 billion for its buyout fund but gathered only $175 million in the US. Japan, Schwarzman says, rescued the firm.
Blackstone is leading a $1bn private credit financing to support the combination of the security enterprise solutions businesses of Leidos Holdings and Analogic Corporation, Bloomberg reported. Blackstone Credit & Insurance is reportedly lead lender and joint lead arranger, alongside HPS Investment Partners, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo. Leidos, a listed engineering and technology services company based in Virginia, serves government and commercial clients. It generated $17.2bn in revenue in 2025. Analogic develops imaging, detection, artificial intelligence, and automation technologies. Private equity firm Altaris acquired it in a $1.1bn take-private deal in 2018. Blackstone was reportedly also among the lenders in a recent financing for Waymo, which was increased to $5bn.

Blackstone has raised approximately $1 billion for a private credit continuation vehicle, according to Bloomberg. The fund allows existing investors to exit while Blackstone maintains exposure to the underlying loan portfolio. Bloomberg reports that Allianz Global Investors is the lead buyer in the transaction, alongside StepStone Group. The vehicle holds assets from Blackstone Capital Opportunities Fund IV, which completed fundraising in 2022. The original fund delivered a net internal rate of return of 11% as of 30 June, according to Blackstone's latest financial disclosures. Evercore advised Blackstone on the transaction. Some loans will remain held by other Blackstone-managed funds. Blackstone and Allianz declined to comment, whilst Evercore and StepStone did not respond to requests for comment.
Waymo has increased its first private debt deal to $5 billion to support the robotaxi company's expansion. The self-driving vehicle operator is using the funds to fuel growth as it scales operations globally. The debt raise marks Waymo's entry into private credit markets as it seeks to expand beyond its current service areas.
