Requirements
  • High school graduation is required.
  • Previous Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory experience is required.
  • A Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Radiology Technologist registration or eligibility is preferred, or a Cardiovascular Credentialing International credential for the catheterization laboratory.
  • Advanced Life Support is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged, extensive, or considerable periods.
  • Must be able to lift, position, push, and transfer patients.
  • Must be able to perform considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Must be able to work variable and irregular hours and respond to emergency-care situations.
  • Must use protective apparel, including lead aprons, eye protection, sterile and non-sterile medical gloves, and masks, when required.
  • Must follow patient-safety, infection-control, hazardous-waste, patient-identification, confidentiality, and hospital policies.
Responsibilities
  • Perform general patient care related to patients’ physical needs under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Initiate and plan patient comfort and hygiene measures.
  • Make frequent rounds on patients and note their condition, requests, and environment.
  • Perform electrocardiograms.
  • Assist with patient admission, discharge, and transfer.
  • Assist nurses and physicians with procedures.
  • Prepare procedure rooms before and after cases.
  • Apply sterile drapes and prepare equipment before procedures.
  • Document pertinent patient history and limitations in the computerized catheterization laboratory charting system under the registered nurse’s direction.
  • Provide technical support during catheterization procedures, including circulating in procedure rooms and scrubbing during procedures.
  • Connect patients accurately to electrocardiogram monitors.
  • Establish arterial and venous line setups before procedures.
  • Operate hemodynamic monitors and recorders, video and imaging systems, oximeters, contrast injectors, cardiac output units, oxygen-consumption monitors, quantitative analysis software, intravascular ultrasound units, Doppler blood-flow velocity units, intra-aortic balloon pumps, fractional flow reserve equipment, bovine devices, ablators, Impella devices, and temporary pacemakers.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment and ensure they are available and stored appropriately.
  • Empty full trash and soiled-linen containers and notify the appropriate departments to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Perform catheter and sheath removal after invasive procedures.
  • Assess groin sites and peripheral pulses, check vital signs before sheath removal, compress arteries or veins for the prescribed time, assess sites after hemostasis, and provide post-procedure activity instructions.
  • Order supplies from Central Service as directed, send clean supplies for sterilization, and assist with inventory counting.
  • Obtain patient-care instructions and reports from the professional nurse and report changes in patients’ conditions.
  • Document procedures concisely and legibly according to chart-form guidelines.
  • Answer the telephone by identifying the unit and self and direct prompt, courteous attention to patients, families, visitors, and physicians.
  • Practice universal precautions and dispose of hazardous waste according to established guidelines.
  • Clean procedure rooms between patients and maintain a safe, clean, comfortable, and therapeutic environment.
  • Complete annual mandatory requirements and age-specific training.
  • Provide age-appropriate assessments and care, include families or guardians in decision-making when appropriate, and request consultations for special needs or equipment.
  • Assist with unit-based performance-improvement plans, collect assigned data, collaborate on action plans, and participate in nursing-unit research activities.
  • Provide timely, high-quality, respectful patient and family care while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with other departments to facilitate workflow and continuity and recommend changes that improve efficiency and minimize waste.
  • Identify problems, gather pertinent data, suggest solutions, communicate through appropriate authority channels, and work toward resolution.
  • Serve as a resource to coworkers, patients and families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel.
  • Perform additional related duties and assigned telephone, routine patient-care, and data-collection activities as requested.
