  • Experience writing and executing detailed test procedures and producing test reports and as-run records.
  • Experience designing or specifying electrical and mechanical ground support equipment and test stands.
  • Proficiency with test automation and data analysis, such as Python, LabVIEW, or comparable tools, and comfort working with spacecraft command and telemetry systems.

  • Experience with ESD, cleanroom, and contamination control practices for flight hardware.
  • Comfort using multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, data acquisition systems, accelerometers, thermocouples, torque tools, leak detectors, and lifting operations.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction, identify the right next problem to solve, and drive technical work from ambiguity to a flight-ready vehicle.
  • Ability to make practical system-level tradeoffs across test coverage, schedule, cost, facility capability, reliability, and mission risk.
  • Ability to lead through influence in a cross-functional environment spanning avionics, flight software, GNC, power, propulsion, thermal, mechanical, systems, and mission operations.
Responsibilities
  • Own the integration and test strategy, from early verification planning through unit acceptance, vehicle integration, environmental test, launch site operations, and flight readiness.
  • Define the verification and test philosophy, including test-like-you-fly, qualification versus protoflight versus acceptance levels, and test coverage mapped to requirements.
  • Lead vehicle assembly and integration, including integration sequences, mechanical and electrical mates and demates, harness installation, and safe-to-mate and first power-on procedures.
  • Plan and execute environmental test campaigns, including sine and random vibration, shock, acoustic, thermal cycling, thermal vacuum, EMI/EMC, mass properties, and deployment and separation testing.
  • Own vehicle-level functional and performance testing, including comprehensive and abbreviated performance tests, end-to-end command and telemetry checks, polarity and phasing tests, and day-in-the-life mission simulations.
  • Build and maintain flatsat and integrated test benches with avionics and flight software, and support hardware-in-the-loop and end-to-end testing with ground software and mission operations.
  • Own electrical and mechanical ground support equipment, including EGSE racks, solar array and battery simulators, umbilicals, breakout boxes, integration stands, lifting and rotation fixtures, and shipping containers.
  • Build test automation and data infrastructure, including scripted procedures, data acquisition, test databases, automated limit checking, and trending across units and builds.
  • Establish and run integration and test facilities, including cleanrooms, ESD control, contamination control, hazardous operations areas, and calibrated test equipment.
  • Select and manage external test facilities and vendors for environmental, EMC, and specialized testing, and own test readiness reviews and campaign logistics.
  • Partner with propulsion on pressure system proof and leak testing, propellant and pressurant loading, and hazardous operations procedures.
  • Lead launch site operations, including shipping, receiving inspection, final functional tests, fueling support, launch vehicle integration, and countdown support in line with the launch provider's requirements and interface control documents.
  • Drive anomaly investigation and root-cause resolution across hardware and software during integration and test, and own the nonconformance and failure reporting process, such as FRACAS and MRB.
  • Provide technical leadership across integration, test, GSE, test automation, and launch operations efforts.
  • Help hire, manage, mentor, and develop I&T engineers and technicians as the team grows.
  • Establish I&T processes, including test procedures and as-run records, work instructions and travelers, vehicle configuration control, discrepancy handling, and verification discipline appropriate for flight-grade hardware.
  • Help define verification requirements, the verification matrix, test plans, schedules, and facility and staffing needs for the first vehicle and future production builds.
  • Work closely with avionics, flight software, GNC, power, propulsion, thermal, mechanical, systems, quality, and mission operations to design for testability, close interfaces, and field an integrated flight system.
  • Work closely with the founders and early engineering team to shape the technical roadmap, engineering culture, hiring plan, and long-term integration, test, and production strategy.
  • Represent the I&T function in cross-disciplinary design reviews, test readiness and pre-ship reviews, customer conversations, investor diligence, vendor discussions, and launch provider coordination as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated flight heritage, including spacecraft the candidate helped integrate and test that launched and operated on orbit.
  • Experience leading I&T, AIT, test engineering, or launch operations teams.
  • Experience managing engineers or technicians in a startup, aerospace company, defense contractor, launch company, or other high-reliability technical environment.
  • Experience with spacecraft test standards and levels, such as GSFC-STD-7000/GEVS, SMC-S-016, MIL-STD-1540, NASA-STD-7001, and NASA-STD-7002.
  • Experience with launch vehicle integration and launch site operations, including rideshare missions, payload dispensers, and separation systems.
  • Experience building flatsats, EGSE, and hardware-in-the-loop benches, and with command and telemetry tools such as OpenC3 COSMOS, Yamcs, or comparable tools.
  • Experience with vibration test planning, including fixture design, notching, force limiting, modal surveys, and model correlation.
  • Experience with thermal vacuum and thermal balance testing, including test configurations, heater and thermocouple layouts, bakeout, and correlation with thermal models.
  • Experience with deployment testing for solar arrays, antennas, and mechanisms, including gravity offload.
  • Experience with propulsion system testing, including proof and leak testing, propellant loading, and hazardous operations.
  • Experience with lithium-ion flight battery handling, safety, and integration.
  • Experience with mass properties measurement, alignment and metrology, and sensor alignment.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC, RF compatibility, and end-to-end ground station compatibility testing.
  • Experience with workmanship and quality standards, such as IPC J-STD-001 Space Addendum, NASA-STD-8739, and AS9100, and nonconformance management.

  • Experience in early-stage startups, small high-performing teams, or environments where engineers must own broad technical scope.
  • Experience recruiting, interviewing, closing, and onboarding exceptional technical talent.

About the company

Pillar Space offers reusable satellites in orbit that act as rentable infrastructure for other companies’ payloads. A customer launches a payload in a standard adapter, and Pillar Space’s satellite autonomously docks with it in low Earth orbit to supply power, data, thermal management, mobility, and mission operations for the lease, with an optional capsule return to Earth. It differentiates itself by providing on-orbit service via autonomous docking instead of building the customer’s own spacecraft, supported by a team with experience from Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and Impulse Space and backers including South Park Commons. The goal is to provide persistent, ready-to-use orbital infrastructure that lowers the cost and complexity of conducting microgravity experiments and manufacturing in space, aiming for a first mission window in 2028.

What believers are saying

  • South Park Commons highlighted Pillar in July 2026, signaling elite early validation.
  • Pillar’s website says UPLINK ACQUIRED PILLAR-01 NOMINAL, implying active mission progress.
  • Microgravity manufacturing demand strengthened in 2026 through Varda launches and BioOrbit programs.

What critics are saying

  • No disclosed funding in 2026 leaves a capital-intensive hardware program dangerously undercapitalized.
  • Northrop Grumman’s MRV launched July 2026, intensifying servicing competition before Pillar’s 2028 debut.
  • If 2028 slips, customers choose Vast, Varda, or Northrop; Pillar loses the category.

What makes Pillar Space unique

  • Only commercial team docked and undocked spacecraft three times, per Pillar and SPC.
  • Pillar sells reusable orbital infrastructure, not one-off missions, with power, data, thermal, mobility.
  • FIRST mission window 2028 targets rent-time-on-orbit demand before competitors scale.
