- The role requires experience with complex toxicology testing, including liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.
- The role requires knowledge of laboratory techniques, sample preparation, chromatography, spectrometry, quality assurance, quality control, statistical methods, method validation, laboratory information systems, instrumentation maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- The role requires conformance to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and other regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and supervision for clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance.
- Supervise, orient, train, evaluate, and monitor the on-the-job performance of staff performing microbiological, molecular biological, and immunological tests on body specimens.
- Verify specimen identification against physician orders.
- Prepare specimens for testing and handle all specimens safely and carefully.
- Supervise research, prepare pertinent patient data, and refer cases to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
- Monitor staff productivity and quality of work through proactive reviews of attendance and scheduling accuracy.
- Initiate performance-management processes addressing ongoing performance issues.
- Recognize test inconsistencies, take corrective action, and supervise laboratory subordinates in resolving similar problems.
- Run quality-control tests and maintain appropriate data records.
- Perform and review testing quality controls and determine whether results are within acceptable ranges.
- Advise technologists and other healthcare providers on proper specimen-collection methods.
- Establish and continuously assess internal controls and compliance with University policies and procedures, and ensure employees are trained on them.
- Perform complex toxicology testing for blood and urine drug confirmations and quantitation using advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques.
- Analyze patient samples to detect and quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, and other controlled substances using instrumental and chemical techniques.
- Work independently on quality-assurance and quality-control requirements with guidance from the director.
- Oversee and assist with preparation and certification of quality-control solutions.
- Review patient sample results and quality-control results.
- Report patient results accurately into clinical laboratory information system platforms.
- Apply advanced statistical methods for data interpretation and method validation.
- Use MassHunter, Sunquest, UChart, and Microsoft Office to operate instruments and manage laboratory information.
- Perform routine, non-routine, and advanced maintenance and troubleshooting for instrumentation.
- Oversee laboratory quality-assurance and quality-control duties.
- Assist in training and evaluating Clinical Toxicologist 1 and 2 personnel, including internal competency and proficiency-testing preparation and evaluation.
- Attend and present at departmental meetings and produce quality-assurance and quality-control reports.
- Oversee and assist with method development and validation for clinical testing.
- Assist in ensuring conformance to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and other regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with the department quality-assurance team, laboratory personnel, and healthcare providers.
- Oversee and assist with maintaining laboratory-generated documentation.
- Assist with scheduling equipment maintenance and maintaining equipment and instrument maintenance and calibration records.
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
Desired Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience as a clinical chemistry laboratory supervisor.
- Certification in toxicology or clinical chemistry.
