  • A Master's degree in Medical Physics or a related field.
  • Board certification in Medical Physics or Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology.
  • At least two years of continuous working experience within the last three years in therapeutic medical physics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and networking related to radiation oncology.
  • Ability to pass a government background check and complete required Veterans Affairs training.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance.
  • Ability to push or pull with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Be available when necessary to consult with the Radiation Oncologist and advise or direct technical staff while radiation treatments are being planned or patients are being treated.
  • Be present at the machine during patient setup for stereotactic body radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and image-guided radiation therapy.
  • Observe or help supervise complicated simulations and treatment setups when possible.
  • Specify and monitor methods for calculating monitor units or treatment times and ensure independent reviews of those calculations within the specified time period.
  • Develop and maintain a method for the weekly and systematic review of charts for all patients receiving radiation treatment, subject to approval by the Veterans Affairs Chief of Staff or designee.
  • Perform a final chart review at the end of each radiation treatment course to confirm that the prescribed dose was delivered and document total doses delivered to critical structures.
  • Provide data input to the treatment planning system based on measured beam data and manage output from the planning systems.
  • Understand the treatment-planning calculation algorithm and document conditions where the algorithm and measured data disagree by more than five percent.
  • Periodically test treatment-planning-system output by comparing it with direct measurements of radiation beams.
  • Ensure that all users of the treatment planning system receive appropriate training.
  • Advise and consult with Veterans Affairs and third-party clinical engineers on operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting radiation oncology linear accelerators, computed tomography simulation equipment, relevant accessories, computerized network interconnectivity, and record-and-verification systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a healthcare system with American College of Radiology or APEx certification.
  • Experience with Varian linear accelerators, including TrueBeam with Brainlab accessories.
  • Experience with image-guided radiation therapy, including cone-beam computed tomography.
  • Experience with the Eclipse treatment planning system and ARIA record-and-verify system.
  • Experience with treatment modalities including two-dimensional/three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, and intensity-modulated radiation therapy/volumetric modulated arc therapy.
  • Experience with intensity-modulated radiation therapy quality assurance systems such as MapCHECK.
