Cummins, FuelCell Energy and PG&E: three hydrogen stocks to watch as oil stays pricey

Simply Wall St has named three US hydrogen fuel cell stocks to watch as Middle East supply risks keep oil prices high and renewed attention falls on cleaner energy. Cummins (CMI) has a market cap of $73.0 billion and revenue of $35.7 billion. Its Accelera unit makes hydrogen-ready fuel cell and electrified powertrains, and its new HELM engine platforms run on diesel, natural gas, or hydrogen. FuelCell Energy (FCEL), valued at $974 million, makes revenue of about $154 million. It plans 500 megawatts of annual production capacity by June 2028, though it ran at only 37 megawatts last quarter and booked $17 million of charges on the Fit Energy agreement. PG&E has a market cap of $28.5 billion and revenue of about $25.8 billion. It uses stationary fuel cells for grid resilience, and expects 1.8 gigawatts of data center load online by 2030.

Smell diesel? Check if your Kenworth or Peterbilt is under recall.

Smell diesel? Check if your Kenworth or Peterbilt is under recall. Another recall involving Cummins engines has been issued. The latest includes tens of thousands of Paccar trucks. In September, Cummins issued an equipment recall related to L9 engines. Affected engines have a remote fuel filter hose that can separate from the fitting, potentially causing a fuel leak and an engine stall. Although more than 39,000 L9 engines are subject to the recall, the manufacturer estimates only 3% actually have a defective fuel filter hose. Soon after, Daimler Truck North America recalled a few thousand Freightliner trucks and chassis equipped with Cummins L9 engines. No warranty claims or injuries related to the defect have been reported. More than a dozen manufacturers purchased the Cummins L9 engines. Paccar is the latest to issue its related recall. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, nearly 27,000 Paccar trucks are being recalled. Those include: * Kenworth T270 (model year 2022-23) * Kenworth T280 (2022-27) * Kenworth T370 (2022-23) * Kenworth T380 (2023-27) * Kenworth T480 (2023-27) * Peterbilt 548 (2022-27) * Peterbilt 536 (2023-27) * Peterbilt 537 (2023-27) * Peterbilt 567 (2025) Like the original Cummins recall, Paccar estimates only 3% of the total recall population is affected by the defect. Owners of affected trucks may smell diesel or notice the leak. A low fuel pressure warning may come on. Similar to the Daimler Truck recall, there have been no reports of warranty claims or injuries. Paccar will replace the fuel hoses at no cost. Notification letters are expected to be sent to truck owners on Dec. 20. Questions about this recall can be directed to Peterbilt's customer service at 940-591-4220 or Kenworth at 425-828-5888 with recall number 26PACJ. NHTSA's number for this recall is 26V700. Daimler Truck and Paccar's recalls account for about three-quarters of all Cummins L9 engines being recalled. The remaining manufacturers include buses, cranes, fire trucks, motorhomes and refuse and utility trucks. LL

Freightliner recall warns of fuel leaks, engine stalls.

Freightliner recall warns of fuel leaks, engine stalls. Daimler Truck North America is recalling a few thousand Freightliner trucks and chassis after discovering an issue with Cummins engines. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, model year 2023 Freightliner 108SD and 2022-25 Business Class M2 trucks are affected by the recall. Various Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) chassis models are also included. Freightliner trucks and chassis being recalled are equipped with a Cummins L9 engine. Those engines may have a remote fuel filter hose that separates from the fitting. That can cause a fuel leak and an engine stall. A fuel leak increases the chances of a fire, while a stalled engine can increase the chance of a crash. Truck owners may be able to detect if their Freightliner has the defect if someone around the truck sees or smells signs of a fuel leak. A warning light may come on indicating a low fuel pressure fault FC559. No warranty claims or injuries related to the defect have been reported. Daimler Truck estimates only 3% of the recall population is affected. Daimler Truck's recall stems from a Cummins recall issued in September. That recall affected nearly 40,000 L9 diesel engines. According to a recall report, Daimler Truck and Paccar were among the manufacturers that purchased some of those engines. Paccar has not issued a similar recall as of mid-October. For this recall, Cummins will replace the fuel hoses for free. Notification letters to owners of affected Freightliner trucks will be sent out around Nov. 20. Questions about this recall can be directed to Daimler Truck customer service at 800-547-0712 with recall number F1042. NHTSA's number for this recall is 26V660. Truck owners can also call Cummins' customer service at 800-286-6467. LL

This shift occurred after Cummins acquired full ownership of Hydrogenics, a company known for its hydrogen generation technologies, thus consolidating its market position. The agreement with Cummins is particularly advantageous for Stargate, as it allows the company to tap into a vast customer base that includes industrial gas firms operating hydrogen production systems. With the capacity to manufacture these replacement stacks and support services for the existing fleet, Stargate is poised for growth in this high-demand sector. Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate, expressed that this selection by Cummins reflects the confidence in their engineering and manufacturing capabilities, as well as their commitment to long-term customer support. Tim Proctor, Executive Director of Electrolyzer Engineering at Cummins, also highlighted Stargate's technical expertise and dedication, suggesting a strong alignment in their partnership goals. Although specific financial details and timelines for deliveries have not been disclosed, this agreement marks an important milestone for both companies. In addition to this new partnership with Cummins, Stargate Hydrogen is actively expanding its manufacturing footprint. Last year, the company opened a 140MW factory in Tallinn, which supports the production of its 1MW and 10MW alkaline electrolyser products. Moreover, Stargate recently established a framework agreement with Bulgaria's Hydrogenera, aiming to supply stacks for various European hydrogen projects, which further extends its reach within the hydrogen ecosystem. Overall, the collaboration between Stargate Hydrogen and Cummins signifies a positive development in the hydrogen production landscape, showcasing opportunities for growth and innovation in the sector. With increased investments in manufacturing technologies and strategic partnerships, Stargate is well-positioned to support the transition towards more sustainable energy solutions.
