About the company

Scale AI supplies the data that AI labs use to train and test their models, and it builds custom AI applications for companies and government agencies such as the Pentagon. It first made its name labeling camera and sensor data for self-driving car companies like Waymo, then worked with OpenAI on InstructGPT, the 2022 forerunner of ChatGPT. Freelancers, some of them doctors and lawyers, write, label, and grade examples through its Outlier platform, and labs pay Scale for this data and for tests of model quality. Clients pay Scale to build AI tools on their own data, and some of those tools run on classified military networks. Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo founded Scale AI in 2016, and it is based in San Francisco.

What believers are saying

  • Military demand outran the contract: the Pentagon's AI office raised Scale's spending cap fivefold to $500 million in May 2026.
  • Its apps business is a second engine: Scale says it more than doubled revenue in 2025's second half.
  • Room to grow in government: 57 of Scale's 183 open roles in October 2026 are on its public sector teams.

What critics are saying

  • Job security leans on its part-owner: Meta's yearly purchase pledge through 2030 equals nearly half of Scale's sales, Forbes estimates.
  • Overall growth is modest: revenue rose from $870 million in 2024 to nearly $1 billion in 2025, Scale told Forbes.
  • A startup took its spy-agency work: a court upheld Enabled Intelligence's $708 million win over incumbent Scale in July 2026.

What makes Scale AI unique

  • Its chairman works for its biggest owner: founder Alexandr Wang leads Meta's AI lab, and Meta owns 49% of Scale.
  • It grades the models it helps train: its research lab published 450-plus evaluations of 50-plus AI models in 2025.
  • A flagship Pentagon project runs through it: since 2025, Scale has led Thunderforge, which puts AI agents into military planning.

Oracle among AI firms forging ahead with Gulf expansion.

Oracle among AI firms forging ahead with Gulf expansion. Oct 30, 2026, 5:06am PDT US artificial intelligence firms are expanding in the Gulf, a sign that some companies are not shying away despite increased risks to digital infrastructure. Oracle plans to build more data centers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE to meet rising demand, The National reported. And Scale AI, which is 49% owned by Meta and sells labeled data for model training, opened an office at the Dubai International Financial Center, following an agreement to work with a G42 unit to develop AI agents. In Saudi Arabia, New York-listed Snowflake projects it will invest $300 million in the kingdom through 2030; its customers there include dairy company Almarai and PIF-backed developer Red Sea Global. Led by former Google Ads chief Sridhar Ramaswamy, it has plans for two more cloud computing regions and, with the communications ministry, AI training for thousands of Saudis. So far, data center construction has "barely moved the needle for Gulf economies," according to Bloomberg economist Ziad Daoud. The Iran war makes building that infrastructure pricier and riskier; he wrote that hardened security adds 5% to 7% to costs. Still, it appears there is willingness to absorb the new premium.

AI chemistry risk benchmark: Scale launches DualChem via CAISSI.

AI chemistry risk benchmark: Scale launches DualChem via CAISSI. Scale has published DualChem, described by FedScoop as the first AI benchmark released through its CAISSI partnership, to help government agencies assess AI model risk in chemistry applications. What happened. Scale has published DualChem, which FedScoop describes as the first AI benchmark released through its partnership with CAISSI. The benchmark is designed to help government agencies assess the risk that an AI model poses in chemistry applications. The release is aimed at public-sector decision-makers rather than general-purpose AI use. It gives agencies a structured way to judge model risk before AI systems are deployed in chemistry-related work. FedScoop is the only source for this item, and its coverage offers limited detail on the benchmark's methodology, the remit of the CAISSI partnership or the timing of wider availability. Readers should consult the original reporting for those specifics. Why it matters. This points to where AI evaluation is heading. Public bodies increasingly need to know how a model behaves in a specific, high-stakes domain, not only whether it is broadly capable. A domain-specific benchmark turns a general concern into a repeatable test that procurement teams and oversight functions can apply consistently. For digital transformation leaders, the implication is operational. Agencies adopting AI in sensitive areas will need evaluation standards alongside the technology itself, and those standards will shape how services are designed, approved and monitored over time. The renascence take. Most coverage will treat a benchmark as a technical footnote. Renascence see it as a service-design artefact. Whoever defines the test effectively defines what "safe enough" means for the people who will eventually rely on the system. Risk thresholds are never neutral; they encode assumptions about who bears harm and how much friction is acceptable. The behavioural principle at work is that people trust systems they can understand and verify, so evaluation criteria should be legible to the staff and citizens affected, not only to specialists. A customer-obsessed operator in the public sector should ask not just whether a model passes, but what that pass means in a frontline interaction. Build measurement into the service journey from the start rather than bolting it on at approval. This briefing was written by its Newsdesk, synthesising reporting from the outlets below.
