Cabot to use $50-million DOE grant to expand production of conductive additives in Louisiana and Texas.

Cabot to use $50-million DOE grant to expand production of conductive additives in Louisiana and Texas. Cabot will use a modified $50 million grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to expand domestic production of battery conductive additives at its existing plants in Franklin, Louisiana, and Pampa, Texas. The company plans to invest about $75 million of its own alongside the grant. The grant originally backed a Cabot project in Michigan. Cabot and DOE redirected the funding to a two-site brownfield expansion program, which Cabot expects to speed up development of a domestic supply of conductive additives. The original plan, announced in September 2024, was a $181 million plant in Wayne County, Michigan, for battery-grade carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and conductive additive dispersions. The Franklin plant will produce LITX battery-grade conductive carbons. Pampa will host what Cabot says will be the first commercial-scale production of its carbon nanostructures (CNS), which the company calls its most advanced conductive additive technology. CNS is part of Cabot's ENERMAX product family. Both projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2028. Conductive additives form the electron-conducting network inside a lithium-ion electrode, linking active-material particles to each other and to the current collector. Cabot ties the expansion to battery demand from energy storage systems, the power needs of AI infrastructure and data centers, grid modernization and broader electrification. "By leveraging our existing manufacturing assets, we can efficiently expand our battery materials platform, strengthen our position in the North American battery ecosystem, and support our customers' growth with localized supply," said Sean Keohane, Cabot's President and CEO.

Cabot Corporation gets $50M DOE grant to expand US battery materials production

Cabot Corporation has received a modified $50 million grant from the US Department of Energy to expand its North American battery materials platform. Combined with approximately $75 million of Cabot's own investment, the funding will support expanded production of advanced conductive additives at facilities in Franklin, Louisiana, and Pampa, Texas. The grant redirects funding from a previously announced Michigan project to this two-site brownfield expansion programme. The investment aims to address rising demand for battery materials driven by energy storage systems, artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centres, grid modernisation, and broader electrification trends. The Franklin facility will produce LITX advanced battery-grade conductive carbons, whilst the Pampa site will establish commercial-scale production of carbon nanostructures. Both projects are expected to become operational by the end of 2028.

Together, these capabilities enable the company to scale production efficiently, support customers with localized supply, and compete across the major battery markets of North America, Europe, and Asia. "This investment represents an important step in our strategy to build a differentiated battery materials business that supports some of the most significant growth trends shaping the global economy," said Sean Keohane, president and chief executive officer of Cabot Corporation. "Demand for advanced batteries continues to expand across energy storage, electrification, and emerging AI-related infrastructure. By leveraging our existing manufacturing assets, we can efficiently expand our battery materials platform, strengthen our position in the North American battery ecosystem, and support our customers' growth with localized supply." Cabot's planned investments will support production of LITX(R) advanced battery-grade conductive carbons at its Franklin, Louisiana facility and establish the first commercial-scale production of carbon nanostructures (CNS), Cabot's most advanced conductive additive technology and part of the ENERMAX(TM) product family, at its Pampa, Texas facility. These conductive additives are designed to help improve battery performance and support the evolving needs of next-generation energy storage and electrification applications. Both projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2028. "Cabot is a trusted partner and technology leader in conductive additives for the battery industry, delivering innovative solutions backed by a global manufacturing footprint and technical expertise," said Keohane. "These investments reinforce our commitment to the North American battery market and position us to be a reliable, long-term supplier as our customers scale production. Together with our technology leadership, broad portfolio, and established customer relationships, we believe these investments will strengthen our competitive position globally and advance battery materials as an increasingly important growth platform for Cabot." Cabot Reinforcement Materials earnings fall despite higher volumes.

Cabot Reinforcement Materials earnings fall despite higher volumes. 6 Aug 2026 Pricing pressure from 2026 tire contracts outweighs growth in Asia, Americas Boston, Massachusetts - Cabot Corp. has reported lower third quarter earnings in its Reinforcement Materials business, which mainly produces rubber grade carbon black. For the quarter ended 30 June, segment EBIT fell 24% year-on-year to $97 million (€84 million), while earnings (EBITDA) declined 20% to $117 million, Cabot reported 4 Aug. Segment sales for the three-month period, meanwhile, grew 4.5% to $599 million. Gross profit per tonne weakened following the company's calendar-year 2026 tire customer agreements, the company reported. Volumes increased 5% year-on-year, driven by growth in Asia-Pacific (+10%) and the Americas (+4%), supported by additional capacity in Indonesia and Cabot's acquisition in Mexico. Volumes in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) declined 4%. The segment results were impacted by "challenging market conditions and pricing headwinds from our 2026 annual tire customer agreements," said outgoing president and CEO Sean Keohane. According to Cabot, higher volumes and a more favourable regional product mix only partially offset the lower gross profit per tonne resulting from the customer contract renewals. In an earnings call on the same day, Keohane said market fundamentals were showing signs of improvement, pointing to lower tire imports into western markets. The executive welcomed the EU's recent anti-dumping duties on Chinese tire imports, saying the measures should be "directionally positive" for the European tire industry over time. Year-to-date tire imports into the EU were down 16% through April, while imports into North America declined around 3%, Keohane said, noting that such trends were "encouraging and supportive of market fundamentals." According to the Cabot leader, most Chinese tire makers fall inside the 24%-45% range of EU anti-dumping duties. Furthermore, there are additional countervailing duties measures "that could materially increase that total duty burden," he added. Those duties, according to Keohane, "are possibly going to be announced by August... with an expectation of definitive measures by later in the year, December. Looking ahead, the company expects a modest sequential decline in fourth-quarter EBIT, citing normal seasonal volume weakness and a less favourable regional product mix, particularly in EMEA. "We normally experience some seasonality in this quarter," Keohane added. "The demand environment remains as expected with that normal seasonality embedded in it." * Every issue of European Rubber Journal (6 issues) including Special Reports & Maps. * Unlimited access to ERJ articles online * Daily email newsletter - the latest news direct to your inbox * Access to the ERJ online archive
