Requirements
  • High school or GED graduation is required.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Previous Certified Medical Assistant or Medical Assistant experience is required for the PRN position.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and applicable special procedures is required.
  • Working knowledge of routine and special patient-treatment procedures is required.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, clinic health and safety precautions, and infection-control procedures is required.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions is required.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information is required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff is required.
  • Typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology are required.
  • Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Answer telephones and greet patients.
  • Update and file patient medical records.
  • Complete insurance forms and handle correspondence.
  • Schedule appointments and arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping.
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist physicians and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests on the premises.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments.
  • Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and involvement in the plan of care, and document this in the patient record.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Authorize drug refills and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy as directed.
  • Draw blood.
  • Prepare patients for X-rays, tests, and procedures.
  • Take electrocardiograms.
  • Remove sutures and staples.
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Perform daily clinic preparation, registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred for Levels II and III.
  • One year of clinical Medical Assistant experience is required for Level II.
  • Three years of clinical Medical Assistant experience is required for Level III.
  • An Associate degree in Medical Assisting may provide one year of experience credit.
  • For Levels II and III, the ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively is desirable.
