About the job

Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience in industrial or product design, preferably in consumer hardware or robotics.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating proportion, detail, and emotional sensitivity.
  • Experience taking products from concept to production.
  • Fluency in Rhino, Alias, Fusion, or similar tools.
  • Experience with Class-A surfacing.
  • Experience working with color, material, and finish specifications and injection molding vendors.
  • Understanding of design-for-manufacturing constraints, including draft, parting lines, and textures.
  • Ability to assess cosmetic quality and articulate the difference between acceptable and unacceptable results.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the exterior design of LeLamp across product generations and maintain consistency as the product platform evolves.
  • Develop the product’s visual language, form, materials, and emotional presence.
  • Sketch and present design directions that communicate personality, not just geometry.
  • Translate concepts into production-ready 3D models with mechanical engineers.
  • Define color, material, and finish specifications and maintain documentation.
  • Review prototypes and cosmetic samples against design intent.
  • Contribute to the robot’s visual presentation, including packaging, photography, art direction, and first-impression experience.
  • Own Class-A surfacing for injection-molded and fabricated exterior parts while ensuring surfaces remain design-for-manufacturing-ready without compromising design quality.
  • Prepare visual references, annotated models, and finish sample boards to support design reviews.
  • Work closely with the CEO and founding team to take the robot’s exterior form from early sketches through physical samples to shipped products.
Desired Qualifications
  • Comfort designing without clear precedents.
  • Care about how everyday objects fit into people’s lives and homes.
  • Ability to maintain creative direction through a long development process while iterating through physical samples and vendor feedback.
  • Ability to take ownership of a product’s aesthetic quality across stages of the development process.
  • Ability to work effectively in small, collaborative teams with industrial designers and mechanical engineers.
  • Ability to think through the full arc from concept to shipped unit.

About the company

Human Computer Lab builds expressive, character-driven robots for everyday home use, focusing on emotionally resonant devices rather than purely functional machines. Their first product, LeLamp, is an open-source robotic lamp that can look toward a user’s point, respond to voice, and perform playful gestures, turning a common object into a social partner. They differentiate themselves by prioritizing human–computer interaction and character in everyday objects, with an approach that starts small (the “iPod of robotics”) before expanding to broader consumer robotics. Their goal is to bring robotics into homes through engaging, familiar devices and to develop a scalable platform for a new generation of home robotics.

What believers are saying

  • LeLamp has active preorders and plans broader pilots in mid-late 2026.
  • South Park Commons spotlighting at its July 2026 Demo Faire validates investor and talent interest.
  • The company is recruiting robotics, electrical, industrial-design, and controls talent across North America.

What critics are saying

  • LeLamp remains early development; GitHub shows no releases and hobbyist-kit beta timing slips.
  • Big incumbents like Apple research, Samsung Ballie, Amazon Astro, and 1X crowd the category.
  • No clear revenue engine exists beyond preorders; a missed 2026 launch kills momentum.

What makes Human Computer Lab unique

  • Shahvir Sarkary frames home robotics as an interface problem, not humanoid labor.
  • LeLamp blends expressive motion, voice response, and open-source hardware around Apple ELEGNT.
  • Human Computer Lab targets emotionally resonant companion robots before scaling to broader home platforms.
