About the company

General Dynamics builds warships, nuclear submarines, combat vehicles, and munitions for the U.S. military and allied governments, plus Gulfstream business jets for corporations and private owners. Gulfstream designs large, long-range jets and maintains them through its own service centers and completion shops. A separate technologies arm runs IT, cybersecurity, and command-and-control systems for defense and federal civilian agencies. The company earns its money from multiyear government contracts for ships, vehicles, and services, and the rest from selling and servicing jets. General Dynamics was founded in 1952 and is based in Reston, Virginia.

What believers are saying

  • Submarine work is locked in: the Navy's July 2026 award for 14 subs totals $76.6 billion, split with HII.
  • Shipyards are hiring fast: in February 2026, Electric Boat planned 8,000 hires that year, up from 3,000 in 2025.
  • Orders are outrunning sales: backlog jumped 32% in a year to $136.5 billion by June 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Submarine schedules keep slipping: in April 2026, GD said the first Columbia sub was tracking to 2028 delivery.
  • IT jobs hinge on contract renewals: GDIT filed layoff notices covering 410 Northern Virginia workers in August 2026.
  • Washington sets the ceiling: 68% of 2025 revenue came from the US government, tying jobs to defense budgets.

What makes General Dynamics unique

  • Unlike Lockheed or Northrop, it owns a business-jet maker: Gulfstream delivered 41 jets in Q2 2026 alone.
  • It builds the sea leg of US nuclear deterrence: Electric Boat leads the Columbia ballistic missile submarine program.
  • It runs the Army's only tank factory: the Lima, Ohio, plant is the sole place Abrams tanks are made.

General Dynamics may be 20% undervalued at $344.23 as CEO succession looms in 2027

General Dynamics shares may be undervalued, according to a discounted cash flow analysis by Simply Wall St. The stock trades at $344.23 after an 82.3% gain over five years, and the model puts its intrinsic value meaningfully above that price. The estimate rests on latest twelve month free cash flow of about $6.6 billion, with steady growth assumed. The stock trades at 20.7 times earnings. Danny Deep is due to take over as chief executive in 2027, while Phebe Novakovic stays on as executive chair. The model assumes continuity in cash generation through the handover. A community narrative on the platform puts the stock at 7% undervalued. It cites a record order backlog of $136.5 billion, more than two years of revenue.

Cramer picks Lockheed Martin over General Dynamics as defence backlog hits $230B

Jim Cramer recommended Lockheed Martin over General Dynamics during a Mad Money segment, citing stronger fundamentals despite both being sound investments. General Dynamics reported Q2 revenue of $14.1 billion, up 8.1% year-over-year, whilst Lockheed Martin posted $20.1 billion, an 11% increase. Lockheed secured $65 billion in new orders versus General Dynamics' $20 billion, pushing Lockheed's backlog to a record $230 billion — nearly $94 billion more than General Dynamics. Lockheed trades at approximately 16.50 times forward earnings compared to General Dynamics' 20.12 multiple. Lockheed also benefits from stronger exposure to accelerating missile programme demand. Cramer cautioned that future federal deficit control measures could constrain military spending, presenting risks to both defence contractors.

General Dynamics beats Q2 expectations, seen 5% undervalued with record $136.5B backlog

General Dynamics reported second-quarter 2026 results that beat consensus expectations, with revenue and earnings growth across all four segments. A discounted cash flow model presents a contrasting view, valuing the company at $383.07, which would indicate a modest premium at current prices.
