Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, a Certificate of Registration as a Medical Assistant, or formal medical services training in the United States Armed Forces is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required or must be obtained before the hire date.
  • Texas Phlebotomy Certification is required within two days of hire if not current at the time of hire.
  • At least two years of direct patient-care experience is required, along with working knowledge of infection control and universal precautions.
  • Basic personal-computer skills are required, including work with a Windows operating system and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • The employee must maintain patient confidentiality under HIPAA standards.
  • The employee must have verbal and written communication skills in English; additional language abilities are desirable.
  • The employee must be able to work with diverse people and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • The employee must be able to prioritize, schedule, and complete work using time-management practices.
  • The employee must be able to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and complete activities on time.
  • The employee must be able to work productively with other departments, employees, partners, and organizations.
  • The employee must usually be available to work 40 hours per week, including some weekends when required.
  • The employee must be able to manage conflict and negotiate mutually beneficial solutions.
  • The employee must be able to perform the specified physical activities, including standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive hand and wrist motions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • The employee must be able to communicate spoken instructions accurately and perceive detailed auditory information.
  • The employee must be able to work amid distractions and frequent interruptions and move between tasks.
  • The selected applicant is subject to a pre-employment background check.
Responsibilities
  • Room and prepare patients for clinic visits.
  • Obtain and document patient medical histories, including allergies, family, social, and surgical history, in the medical record.
  • Obtain and record vital signs.
  • Perform phlebotomy and process laboratory specimens during clinic operating hours.
  • Dispense medications and administer sexually transmitted infection treatments, including injections, according to provider directives and Standing Delegation Orders.
  • Serve as a liaison between the laboratory, providers, and patients.
  • Review provider orders for accuracy and completeness and verify specimen labeling and patient identification.
  • Follow established protocols for specimen handling.
  • Clean, stock, and maintain examination rooms for patient care.
  • Assist clinic staff and the Clinic Administrator with monitoring inventory and verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Promote infection-prevention practices and follow universal precautions.
  • Complete required annual clinical competencies and training.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to HIPAA and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, quality-improvement initiatives, and other organizational activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-waived laboratory testing is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with LGBTQIA+ and/or other marginalized communities is strongly preferred.
  • Microsoft Office skills and the ability to learn company-specific programs or software are preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish ability is a plus.
