Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology or a closely related field such as mathematics, physics, or chemistry, or equivalent relevant work experience; alternatively, an associate degree with 6–8 years of proven technical competency, or no degree with 11–13 years of proven technical competency.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings and test data.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, operating principles, calibration procedures, and general laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Systematic problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, follow through, and evaluate assigned functions and duties.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to supervise less experienced personnel when needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of standards and testing procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of CSA certification options, programs, and services applicable to various equipment.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and project-management skills.
  • Technical report-writing ability.
  • Computer proficiency in word processing, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment, instruments, and tools.
  • Ability to move and lift heavy samples and test equipment.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Ability to concentrate while working with electricity and conducting testing.
  • Ability to assess testing results using sight, touch, hearing, and smell while managing shock, energy, heat, mechanical, and toxic-material hazards.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct gas-fueled appliance testing programs on complex units and prepare associated documentation.
  • Assume responsibility for completing assigned projects within negotiated time and cost schedules.
  • Participate in or lead special project teams identified by management.
  • Review submittal work-order data and identify additional customer or certifier needs.
  • Review laboratory test reports to ensure tests were performed according to the work order.
  • Prepare or review work orders for test programs.
  • Conduct pre-assessments to verify proper components and agreement with construction indicated in work-order and submittal information.
  • Assist certifiers with construction evaluations and identify rationale for compliance or non-compliance.
  • Record test data; prepare charts; tabulate data; calculate results; and maintain accurate, orderly, complete test data.
  • Oversee technicians conducting tests when required.
  • Mentor junior technicians.
  • Analyze test results, determine compliance with expected trends, and identify reasons for inconsistencies.
  • Write up non-compliance findings and provide them to the certifier or customer.
  • Keep the Lab Manager and/or Manager informed of project status, major problems, and non-compliance.
  • Perform work within established DQD guidelines.
  • Assist in the laboratory audit process.
  • Build special fixtures needed to execute testing protocols.
  • Manage laboratory priorities and information flow to and from certifiers or managers.
  • Perform certification work similar to a Certifier II or III.
  • Maintain the quality and consistency of laboratory equipment.
  • Follow up on non-conformances resulting from routine calibration.
  • Maintain the integrity of customer samples in the laboratory according to DQDs.
  • Interact with clients and agencies involved in the work.
  • Travel to manufacturers’ facilities and perform testing as required.

TORONTO – CSA Group has announced the opening of an accredited, special-purpose laboratory dedicated to testing and certifying the safety of medical-grade PPE. Until now, there have been no domestic providers of testing and certification services for medical-grade PPE.
