Requirements
  • Graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.
  • New York State Physician Assistant license required.
  • Current NCCPA certification required.
  • BLS, ACLS, and AED certification from the American Heart Association required; certifications from other organizations are not accepted.
  • DEA license required.
Responsibilities
  • Manage cardiothoracic surgery patients, including conducting physical examinations, collecting and documenting data, performing approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and professional evaluations, prescribing appropriate interventions and medications, providing direct patient care, and supporting Cardiothoracic Surgery Service Line initiatives in collaboration with affiliated provider groups.
  • Function as a first or second assistant under the surgeon's direction during major and minor cardiothoracic surgical procedures when competencies are met.
  • Harvest and prepare saphenous veins suitable for coronary artery bypass grafting when competencies are met.
  • Be on call at assigned times to assist attending surgeons with urgent or emergency surgical procedures outside usual working hours.
  • Assist with necessary preparation prior to surgery.
  • Participate in care of Cardiothoracic Surgery Department patients, including performing histories and physicals, ordering additional tests when indicated, reviewing all pre-admission testing results, and notifying the attending surgeon of abnormal results.
  • Write admission orders for patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery service.
  • Assist with pre- and post-operative care under the surgeon's supervision for assigned patients.
  • Write appropriate orders, including laboratory tests, medications, narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs, for patients under the supervising surgeon's care.
  • Write routine pre- and post-operative orders as necessary for patient care.
  • Perform routine procedures in patients' pre- and post-operative care as assigned by the responsible attending surgeon.
  • Insert catheters, nasogastric tubes, intravenous infusions, intra-arterial catheters, and urethral catheters.
  • Remove jugular, subclavian, and arterial lines; Swan-Ganz lines; epicardial pacing wires; and mediastinal and pleural chest tubes.
  • Perform emergency life-saving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies when a physician is absent.
  • Provide training and instructions to students, paramedicals, and other non-physician professionals associated with the Departments of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Discuss the appropriate conduit with the attending surgeon before the case.
  • Write progress notes documenting patients' status, treatments, and procedures performed.
  • Notify the supervising surgeon of unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Write appropriate orders and document in progress notes the institution and maintenance of physical restraints in accordance with current hospital policy and applicable state law.
  • Remain in the hospital during regularly scheduled working hours unless excused by the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery or the Director's designee.
  • Perform other duties and procedures assigned by the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery or the Director's designee to ensure proper patient care and department functioning.
  • Perform procedures under the direction of the surgeon in charge, including urinary bladder catheterization; intestinal intubation; injections; immunizations; phlebotomy; surgical wound care, including redressing and removal of sutures; shortening or removing wound drains; starting intravenous infusions and blood transfusions while observing customary check and recheck procedures; and removing intrathoracic catheters.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous cardiothoracic surgery experience is preferred.
  • A Master's degree is preferred.
  • New graduates may be considered if they have relevant Physician Assistant electives or clinical background.
