Requirements
  • Current appropriate state licensure and compliance with practice requirements in the state of employment.
  • At least one year of registered nurse experience.
  • Strong assessment skills related to critically ill patients.
  • Successful completion of competency training in the theory and practice of therapeutic apheresis and related procedures.
  • Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation recognition.
  • Organizational and time-management skills and competency in completing continuing apheresis education.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work an on-call rotation covering nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients or equipment weighing more than 200 pounds with mechanical assistance.
  • Ability to pass the Ishihara color-blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and apheresis treatments in hospital and outpatient settings according to company, hospital, and physician-prescribed procedures.
  • Perform therapeutic plasma exchange, red blood cell exchange or depletion, white blood cell and platelet depletions, peripheral blood stem cell and white blood cell collections, photopheresis, low-density lipoprotein apheresis, therapeutic phlebotomy, and other extracorporeal therapies.
  • Perform scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency apheresis treatments, establish care priorities, and initiate, monitor, and discontinue prescribed treatments and medications.
  • Assess patients before, during, and after treatment; identify complications; adjust treatment plans as directed by credentialed physicians; and communicate concerns to physicians and hospital personnel.
  • Implement, administer, monitor, and document patient responses to prescribed treatment modalities, including adverse reactions.
  • Provide shift reports, prioritize patients based on clinical needs, and coordinate treatment schedules and coverage.
  • Document treatment information in the ACES patient record and hospital records as required.
  • Implement physician orders and provide recommendations for patient care plans based on assessment of patient status and developmental needs.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and provide patient and family education.
  • Prepare, set up, operate, monitor, and discontinue apheresis equipment, blood warmers, and related equipment.
  • Perform machine alarm and safety testing, equipment calibration and functional testing, and internal and external disinfection according to policy.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment and treatment areas, perform or confirm preventative maintenance activities, and report equipment or supply problems.
  • Manage and maintain supply inventory, conduct inventory control, and use supplies efficiently to prevent waste.
  • Maintain safe, neat, and adequately stocked supply and equipment areas and follow infection-control precautions.
  • Assist with patient evacuation during emergencies, fires, or disasters according to company and hospital procedures.
  • Complete quality-assurance activities, mandatory education, staff training, orientation, meetings, and assigned projects.
  • Act as a clinical resource for staff members and communicate effectively with physicians, supervisors, hospital staff, coworkers, patients, and families.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and other community locations to provide treatment coverage.
  • Comply with the Code of Business Conduct, company policies, applicable laws, and regulations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Apheresis nursing certification.
  • Peripheral vein cannulation ability.
  • One year of apheresis or intensive care unit, coronary care unit, or emergency department experience.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation recognition.
  • Current knowledge of advances in therapeutic apheresis and inpatient care for hospitalized patients requiring varied treatment modalities.
  • Ability to direct and supervise technical or clerical staff.
