Pataskala rejects proposed data center; voters to decide potential ban in November.

Pataskala rejects proposed data center; voters to decide potential ban in November. by WSYX Staff Wed, August 26, 2026 at 8:09 AM Updated Wed, August 26, 2026 at 8:24 AM PATASKALA, Ohio (WSYX) - After months of debate over a proposed data center in Pataskala, opponents of the project are feeling some relief after City Council voted to block the development. The proposed Aligned Data Centers facility was planned as a 200-megawatt, three-building site. The project had been at the center of community discussion for months, drawing concerns from residents who said a large-scale development would change their neighborhoods. A City Council meeting Tuesday night stretched more than three hours, with a few dozen community members in attendance waiting to see how council members would vote. Ultimately, council voted to accept the Pataskala Planning and Zoning Commission's recommendation to block the development. Residents across Pataskala have been organizing for months to stop data centers from coming to their neighborhoods. City Council had previously moved to put a data center ban on the ballot for November's elections after community members rallied and gathered more than 500 signatures to push for a public vote on whether to welcome data centers. Aligned Data Centers had said the facility would bring more than 100 permanent jobs to the area and add more than $5 billion in investment. Some residents have argued the project would come at too high a cost for nearby neighborhoods. "My entire block will be destroyed. And everyone has been there even longer than me. I was the last one built. Everyone's had lives there. We've had people who have been there 40 years virtually. So I don't even know how the town could consider this," one neighbor said. While City Council has rejected this proposal, the issue is not settled. Pataskala voters will still have the chance to weigh in on a potential data center ban during the November election. BlackRock and MGX inject additional $5B into Aligned Data Centers after $40B acquisition

An investor group backed by BlackRock and UAE-based MGX fund has committed an additional $5 billion investment in Aligned Data Centers, following completion of a $40 billion acquisition of the company. The move responds to growing demand for data centres and computing power needed for artificial intelligence applications and cloud services. The investor group includes the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), focused on developing infrastructure supporting AI technologies. The new investment will support Aligned Data Centers' global expansion plans and increase capacity to meet growing demand from AI companies and cloud service providers. Founded in Texas in 2013 and headquartered in Dallas, Aligned Data Centers currently operates 51 data centres, operational or under development, with total capacity exceeding 6.4 gigawatts across North and South American markets. The company uses proprietary cooling technologies covered by over 50 patents to reduce water consumption and improve energy efficiency.

July 21: A consortium backed by BlackRock and Abu Dhabi-based fund MGX said on Tuesday it has committed an additional $5 billion in growth capital to Aligned Data Centers after closing its $40 billion acquisition of one of the world's biggest data center operators. The investor group agreed last year to buy Aligned from Australian asset manager Macquarie Asset Management, as it seeks to secure computing capacity for AI. Founded in 2013, the Texas-based company builds and operates data centers for hyperscalers and cloud computing companies. It has 51 data center campuses and more than 6.4 gigawatts of operational and planned capacity globally. Andrew Schaap, chief executive of Aligned Data Centers since 2017, will continue to lead the company. The group aims to deploy $30 billion of equity capital initially, with the potential of reaching $100 billion, including debt. The acquisition adds to a wave of investment in digital infrastructure as companies expand computing capacity for AI tools such as ChatGPT.
