Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Fifteen or more years of nonprofit fundraising experience with increasing responsibility in managing a professional team and executing overall strategy.
  • Demonstrated success in change management and in setting and exceeding philanthropic goals.
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating, training, building relationships with, and collaborating with executives, senior staff, and volunteer leaders on development-related activities.
  • Broad knowledge of the functional areas of a comprehensive development program, including individual, institutional, major, planned, digital, and annual giving; special events; donor communications; stewardship; and operations.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to the principles, ethics, and best practices of modern fundraising.
  • Experience managing budgets and revenue forecasts.
  • Ability to travel and attend cultivation events on behalf of the American Repertory Theater and Harvard University.
Responsibilities
  • Create and implement the American Repertory Theater's fundraising strategy and lead its comprehensive development program.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Artistic Director, Managing Director, Board Chair, and board committee chairs on fundraising and organization-wide philanthropic strategy.
  • Manage the development team and lead fundraising efforts to increase annual contributed support beyond $6 million and complete the initial $185 million-plus capital campaign for the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Center for Creativity & Performance.
  • Develop campaign strategy for endowment fundraising in partnership with executive leadership and the boards of the American Repertory Theater and Harvard University.
  • Conceptualize and manage individual giving, institutional giving, major gifts, annual funds and membership, planned giving, stewardship and solicitation, development operations, board recruitment, volunteer management, and campaign planning.
  • Lead and supervise the Development team in collaboration with the senior Artistic team to generate fundraising support for programming and strategic initiatives.
  • Develop and deepen relationships with philanthropic partners and increase awareness and support for the organization and its mission.
  • Lead implementation of a comprehensive development program to grow contributed revenue from individuals, corporations, foundations, government entities, and community organizations.
  • Develop a case for support aligned with the artistic vision, University strategic plans, and organizational sustainability.
  • Develop and implement solicitation strategies for high-capacity individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual and major gifts of six to seven figures and greater.
  • Set and meet annual contributed revenue targets and manage budgetary and financial responsibilities.
  • Prepare strategic philanthropic goals using data-gathering strategies to drive decision-making.
  • Initiate prospect research to identify and qualify prospects and conduct due diligence.
  • Create and implement programs and campaigns to maximize unrestricted and restricted support for annual and multi-year commitments.
  • Set annual fundraising goals and advance the membership program in partnership with Marketing and Communications.
  • Develop proposals, appeals, reports, and other fundraising communications aligned with supporter interests.
  • Collaborate with the University Development Office on integrating University messaging into American Repertory Theater materials and vice versa.
  • Collaborate with Harvard Public Affairs and Communications on media strategy as needed.
  • Identify events and opportunities that support fundraising goals, evaluate their outcomes, and use human and financial resources effectively.
  • Partner with campaign-focused board volunteers, dedicated capital campaign staff, and the University Development Office to complete the capital campaign.
  • Develop and execute travel cultivation events and participate in those events nationally and internationally.
  • Recruit, lead, mentor, staff, onboard, and performance-manage a diverse Development team.
  • Set clear goals and model shared accountability for Development team members.
  • Maintain philanthropic best practices and ensure adherence to fundraising principles, ethics, and policies.
  • Report progress toward targets to executive and University leadership and the board.
  • Engage senior leadership and board members in gift cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.
  • Work with the finance office, University Office of General Counsel, and University Development Office to ensure accountability and standardization with fundraising policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Harvard gift policies in donor engagement and the solicitation and documentation of gifts and gift terms.
  • Communicate and collaborate with University fundraising partners on the approach, engagement, and solicitation of Harvard alumni.
  • Maintain relationships between American Repertory Theater leadership and key donors and volunteers.
  • Maintain a top prospect list and a pipeline for executive and board leadership travel and visits, prepare briefings, and ensure completion of next steps.
  • Support board committees and identify new board members, trustee succession, and staff succession with a strategic and philanthropic mindset.
  • Ensure timely donation acknowledgements and stewardship, pledge reminders, and tax receipting.
  • Manage the grants calendar and reporting deadlines and identify new foundation-support opportunities with the Associate Director of Institutional Giving.
  • Maintain professional relationships within the arts and entertainment industry and knowledge of regional and national funding environments.
  • Partner with the Artistic Director, Managing Director, and Board Chair to identify and recruit approximately 40 board members, educate and engage them in philanthropy, cultivate and solicit their financial support, and leverage their networks.
  • Guide intentional engagement with approximately 35 Board of Advisors members.
  • Assess board composition and lead new board-member recruitment and onboarding with the Managing Director and governance and nominating committee chairs.
  • Ensure that board meetings and events are professionally planned and executed.
  • Maintain an active schedule of in-person and phone or Zoom check-ins with all board members throughout the year.
