Withum sets sights on West Coast growth opportunities.

Withum sets sights on West Coast growth opportunities. CONSULTING: Tax Service Grows Team, Client Base in San Diego Daniel Pearson October 1, 2026 SAN DIEGO - Withum is growing it's San Diego presence as it expands into new markets and builds specialized teams and new technologies to meet increasing demand in the life sciences and technology fields. Firm-wide, Withum had a 27% total growth rate in 2025, bringing their total revenue to $767 million. About $150 million of New Jersey-based Withum's total revenue is now generated on the West Coast, according to Withum CEO Patrick Walsh. "The big markets in Southern California are areas where, on the East Coast, we've already built an incredibly strong brand," Walsh said. "So we are uniquely well positioned to take that skill set, those talented individuals, and really serve the client base in the San Diego market specifically." Unified national footprint. The past year of increased net revenue was propelled by a series of mergers that began in May 2025 when Withum acquired PKF Texas, bringing in 160 employees to the firm. Two months later, Withum acquired CTM CPAs & Business Advisors in Chicago. Lastly, New York-based Freed Maxick was acquired in August 2025, bringing in increased healthcare consulting and manufacturing capabilities for the firm. Withum's San Diego team is reaping rewards from the firm's newfound resources, due to the firm having a "unified national footprint on an industry basis, not a geographic basis." After an acquisition, Withum looks for organic expansion within the firm, aligning talent within a region where they can best meet the needs of related industries. "Our team has strong ties to the San Diego market and has built deep relationships within the business community, while also giving clients access to industry specialists and resources from across the country," said Andrew Hills, partner-in-charge at the San Diego Withum office. "That's where the strength of our local presence, backed by the resources and reach of a national platform, becomes a powerful advantage for our clients." Life sciences, technology growth. The life sciences industry in San Diego is booming. It generated $55.2 billion in economic output in 2025 alone, according to data from the Biocom California Economic Impact Report. Withum is responding to an increased demand for their services within the life sciences and technology markets and is bringing in new personnel to meet growing demand in the region. The firm recently promoted Alex Rockoff to partner and relocated him to the San Diego office from New York. Rockoff has nearly 15 years of auditing experience in the life sciences and technology sectors and will guide Withum's current push to reach more San Diego clients in that market. "As we go to market with technology and life sciences, we look at where identified clients are across the nation. Southern California, there's great clients there," Walsh said. "Now, we have people on the ground in San Diego that are focused on developing that market for technology or financial services, and we build the market around those people. We're excited for what Alex is going to be able to grow in the market." The firm is investing in new technology and talent as their industry becomes increasingly competitive. "Recently, there's been a lot of changes in the professional services market with outside capital coming in and investing in accounting firms," Walsh said. "It's a consolidating industry, so as there's fewer and fewer firms, it continually ups the ante for competition." Withum was one of the first investors in a new auditing software called the Dynamic Audit Solution, and the first to fully adopt it for their entire firm. This program has changed the firm's audit methodology, allowing their auditors to "audit based on risk and not blindly fill out check marks." Withum continues to invest in AI-driven technology and diversified talent, bringing on new expertise like a specialized AI team, including a director of artificial intelligence and AI department heads for different service lines. "My job is to make sure we can counsel them through the rapidly changing environment in which they're operating in," Walsh said. Withum expands west: Withum adds Farber Hass Hurley in California.

Withum expands west: Withum adds Farber Hass Hurley in California. CPA Practice Advisor reports that Withum, a Princeton, NJ-based top 20 firm, has added Farber Hass Hurley, a public accounting and tax firm headquartered in Chatsworth, CA, effective Sept. 1. The announcement signals geographic expansion and additional tax and accounting capacity in California for Withum. What the source says: CPA Practice Advisor reports that Withum, a top-20 firm based in Princeton, NJ, has added Farber Hass Hurley, a public accounting and tax firm headquartered in Chatsworth, California, effective Sept. 1. The source frames this as an addition to Withum's footprint. Why this matters to CPA firms: Geographical additions like this typically involve integrating client rosters, staff, and systems. For managing partners and COOs, the immediate operational implications are integration planning (systems, workflows, and supervision) and assessing where the combined capacity relieves or strains current service delivery. Expect near-term human-labor needs for integration tasks-IT mapping, file conversions, policy alignment, and state-specific tax and licensing checks-followed by potential net capacity gains as duplicate roles are rationalized. Impact on professional judgment and risk: Merging practices across states can introduce differences in methodology, documentation standards, and quality-control practices. Firms will need to reconcile those differences to maintain consistent professional judgment and supervision. There is also an operational risk window during and immediately after integration when oversight gaps can increase the likelihood of errors. Economic and client-capacity implications: Expanding into California may enable Withum to cross-sell services and grow revenue lines regionally, but it also requires upfront integration costs and possible short-term billing disruptions. For practice leaders, the opportunity is to redeploy freed capacity into higher-margin advisory work while managing the transitional cost of aligning staff and systems.
