Requirements
  • An associate degree, diploma, or Bachelor of Science from an accredited nursing program is required before employment; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • At least 1–2 years of healthcare experience.
  • An active Registered Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan.
  • Basic Life Support competency is required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, problem-solving, prioritization, and information-processing skills, including maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, providers, and other staff; maintain patient confidentiality; work independently and as part of a healthcare team; and read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment.
  • Ability to perform mentally and visually demanding work for more than 90% of the work time, regularly lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or equivalent pushing, pulling, or handling.
Responsibilities
  • Provide general nursing staff functions for the practice under provider direction, including obtaining and recording vital signs, performing initial assessments, obtaining patient histories, and providing clinical information and support to providers.
  • Process and post information to patient charts, maintain records, and document test and assessment results.
  • Prepare daily patient charts, collect medical history and physical data, and review charts before appointments to ensure required documents and requests are in place.
  • Triage patient calls to assess urgency and determine whether an appointment or telephone advice is appropriate.
  • Provide patients and families with education and reinforcement regarding medications, diagnostics, treatment, care, and referrals.
  • Assist providers with minor and emergency procedures and examinations, provide patient reassurance, perform specific procedures and testing independently, and set up and assist with procedures such as lumbar punctures and wound care.
  • Schedule tests, diagnostics, and procedures; prepare patients by providing appropriate instructions.
  • Review new referrals and ensure appropriate diagnostic tests and documents are available before appointments.
  • Document ordered test and procedure results and notify patients of results.
  • Take verbal, telephone, and written medication orders from physicians; dispense ordered oral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous medications and record the required information.
  • Participate in performance-improvement monitoring, collect and collate quality-of-care data, and help ensure care meets appropriate standards.
  • Assist with forms such as disability, workers’ compensation, and State of Michigan forms.
  • Perform and document laboratory testing at physician direction.
  • Communicate care and treatment information to referring physicians.
  • Coordinate admissions and referrals and participate in coordinating inpatient resources with ancillary departments.
  • Stock supplies and maintain examination rooms.
  • Attend required staff, educational, and other meetings; remain familiar with insurance and referral policies.
  • Assist in other areas as needed and perform other related duties, including educating student nurses.
