About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years leading teams of approximately 3–8 engineers or equivalent scope; startup or SaaS experience is ideal.
  • Deep software engineering experience in Python/Django or equivalent backend systems, with the ability to guide architecture, review pull requests, and contribute code when needed.
  • Proven ability to lead design reviews, enforce engineering standards, and prototype in Python/Django or a comparable backend stack; comfort working on systems where correctness and reliability are essential.
  • Experience mentoring engineers through one-on-ones, setting growth goals against a leveling matrix, handling performance issues directly, and hiring.
  • A track record of shipping on commitments, creating clarity from ambiguity, and running a healthy software development lifecycle without making process the product.
  • Already use AI heavily in personal work, including coding, debugging, planning, writing, and team operations; can explain the workflow concretely, use AI to improve effectiveness, and review and own its output.
  • Ability to guide architecture, review designs, prototype, and debug critical-path systems; think in systems rather than endpoints.
  • Ability to create clarity, staffing, and culture so individual contributors can own architecture and delivery.
  • Ability to hold AI-assisted work to the same standards of correctness, security, and craft as other work, particularly for ledger, decisioning, and money movement systems.
  • Ability to identify automation opportunities, reduce repetitive work and operational toil, coach a team in effective AI use, and assess new tools based on their effectiveness.
  • Ability to protect production health, incident response, and correctness work while planning delivery and escalating risks early.
  • Ability to uphold key financial-system invariants, including idempotency, auditability, reconciliation, and safe retries.
  • Ability to produce clean code, tests, observability, and small building blocks while managing complexity.
  • Ability to communicate openly, document decisions, surface risks early, seek feedback, and take ownership of outcomes.
Responsibilities
  • Manage approximately 4–6 engineers initially, with room to hire as the team grows.
  • Run growth-focused one-on-ones, set expectations against the individual-contributor leveling matrix, and give timely feedback, including difficult feedback.
  • Hire, onboard, and level the team, and design the hiring bar.
  • Coach project leads and ensure they have support and air cover to lead kickoffs, technical approaches, weekly updates, and releases.
  • Own team execution and results, remaining engaged until problems are solved rather than stopping when tickets close.
  • Translate company priorities into a sequenced plan that other teams can plan around; raise unrealistic timelines, reduce scope, and make tradeoffs explicit.
  • Plan for the Core Services team's operational workload, including production health, incidents, and correctness work.
  • Prioritize incidents over roadmap work and escalate risks early.
  • Lead design reviews and champion simple, correct, observable patterns; improve the systems the team maintains.
  • Contribute to code, prototypes, or production debugging when doing so unblocks the team or validates a difficult tradeoff, then step back.
  • Partner with Client Apps, Platform, Customer Engineering, Product, and Operations so Core Services is easy to build on and does not become a bottleneck.
  • Share context early, document decisions, surface risks before they become problems, and seek feedback while work is easy to change.
  • Support project teams in making decisions and driving work, including gathering context, making tradeoffs, and unblocking themselves.
  • Use AI regularly across coding, debugging, design, planning, writing, analysis, one-on-one preparation, hiring, and communication; evaluate tools, share effective practices, and maintain accountability for results.
  • Coach project leads and engineers in using AI effectively while maintaining standards of correctness, security, and quality.
  • Own people, execution, and outcomes for the assigned portion of the Core Services team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in fintech, payments, card issuing, wallets, or benefits platforms, especially ledgers, authorization or decisioning, or money movement.
  • Experience owning high-integrity backend systems involving financial matters, eligibility, identity, or large-scale integrations where mistakes can affect customers or money.
  • Experience splitting or scaling a team by forming two healthy teams from a group that has outgrown one manager without creating an A/B split.
  • Proven ability to set and use team key performance indicators, including reliability, cycle time, incident health, and delivery against commitments.
  • Experience evaluating tools such as continuous integration/continuous delivery and observability tools to increase leverage rather than ceremony.
  • A strong background in performance management, including promotion cases, performance improvement plans, and hiring pipelines.

Benepass introduces New consumer payment standards for employee benefits.

Benepass introduces New consumer payment standards for employee benefits. Employees can tap, submit, and discover eligible benefits worldwide with fewer payment issues, faster reimbursements, and a more personalized experience. NEW YORK, NY (June 16, 2026) - Benepass, a global benefits capital management platform, today announced a series of product enhancements designed to bring the speed, transparency, and convenience of modern consumer payments to employee benefits. The updates improve the three ways employees use benefit dollars through Benepass: card payments, reimbursements, and personalized benefit discovery. Employees increasingly expect benefits to work as seamlessly as the financial tools they use every day. Yet many benefit experiences still rely on slow reimbursement workflows, confusing eligibility rules, and frustrating card declines. According to WTW's latest EX Intelligence Report, 84% of employees feel informed about their benefits, but only 61% are satisfied with their benefits experience. Benepass is closing that gap by delivering three flexible ways for employees to spend benefit funds globally: * The Benepass Card: Even more eligible purchases are approved in real time through Benepass' fully owned card decisioning technology, helping reduce false declines and create a smoother checkout experience. Employees can tap, swipe, or insert their card for consolidated pre- and post-tax spending on eligible purchases globally. * Near-Instant Claims Reviews: Employees submit receipts in any language and receive reimbursement decisions in as little as 3 to 5 seconds. Claims are auto-approved using AI-powered automated receipt review. Human specialists handle complex cases to ensure accuracy and compliance. * Personalized Benefits Hub: New enhancements rolling out to all customers this year will help employees discover relevant merchants and spending opportunities based on their goals. Improved search, curated content, seasonal promotions, embedded discounts, and targeted campaigns will make it easier to maximize available benefit dollars. Today, 86% of all transactions on the Benepass platform are approved instantly, through auto-substantiated card transactions and instantly approved reimbursements. These latest enhancements are expected to further increase these auto-approval rates. "We are witnessing a massive shift: employees no longer tolerate clunky corporate workarounds for benefits when the rest of their financial life happens instantly," said Mark Fischer, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Benepass. "You can buy groceries in one tap or easily put a card on file to pay for a monthly subscription. Your health and wellness benefits should work exactly the same way. We're erasing the friction of false card declines and delayed payments so that modern benefits finally match modern consumer expectations." The enhancements reflect Benepass' broader vision of building a benefits platform that feels intuitive from the moment employees receive funds to the moment they spend them. By combining intelligent card approvals, near-instant claims reviews, and personalized discovery experiences, Benepass is creating a more modern and flexible way for employees around the world to use their benefits. Stay connected. Its team is committed to sharing stories that help People teams do their jobs and empower employees to get the most out of their benefits.
