Noble Carbon has developed a smart circuit breaker that allows households to electrify without the pain of a main panel upgrade. Plenty of people want to buy electric vehicles, but not everyone is prepared to shell out for an upgrade to their home's electrical service just to add an EV charger. The worry is reasonable. One study found that upgrading things like electrical panels (that box in the garage or basement that delivers power throughout a home) can more than double charger installation costs. Rather than rip out the old panel, Noble Carbon has developed circuit breakers that can take the headache out of installing an EV charger, or a heat pump or an induction stove for that matter. The Pittsfield, Massachusetts, startup is one of 200 startups in this year's TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, a pitch competition at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco in October in which 20 finalists will present on the main stage. Noble Carbon's breakers can adjust how much electricity they deliver to an EV charger in real time, allowing the chargers to squeeze into otherwise at-capacity panels. Electrical panels in people's homes are typically designed to handle absolute peak usage, something that might happen only "a handful of hours per year," Spencer Fields, Noble Carbon's head of marketing, told TechCrunch. For example, if someone is hosting family for a holiday, they might find themselves simultaneously using the water heater, air conditioning, oven, and several TVs, all while every light is on in the house. The rest of the time, the electrical panel has room to spare. In that scenario, Noble Carbon's smart breakers would turn down the power flowing to the devices they control, essentially guaranteeing that the entire house doesn't draw more power than the panel can provide. "In order to avoid a main panel upgrade, you really only need control on your three to six largest loads [the biggest power-drawing appliances]," Fields said. Co-founder and CEO Jared Lebos was inspired to create the product after experiencing rolling blackouts in his home country of South Africa. He worked with Andrew Crane, the company's co-founder and CTO, to turn it into reality. The result is a breaker that fits into existing slots in a home's electrical panel and, according to the company, takes less than five minutes to install. Some of the startup's employees have been testing the breakers in their homes for more than a year, and the product is now undergoing evaluation for UL certification, a widely recognized electrical safety standard. Noble Carbon currently is partnering with the utility Eversource to install its breakers in up to 200 multifamily units in Massachusetts.
Eversource employees to join 30th annual Source to Sea Cleanup. Posted: Sep 17, 2026 / 10:03 PM EDT Updated: Sep 17, 2026 / 10:03 PM EDT SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Eversource employees across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire will join the Connecticut River Conservancy on Friday for the 30th annual Source to Sea Cleanup. The annual event brings volunteers together to remove litter and debris from riverbanks, parks, streams and communities throughout the Connecticut River watershed. What began as a grassroots cleanup in 1996 has grown into one of the region's largest volunteer-driven environmental events. Since formal data collection began, volunteers have documented the removal of more than 2.6 million pounds of trash. This year also marks Eversource's 10th consecutive year supporting the cleanup. Approximately 75 Eversource employees are expected to participate at three cleanup sites across Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, including the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club in Springfield. "Protecting the environment and the communities we serve goes hand in hand with the work we do every day, and Source to Sea gives our employees an opportunity to make a direct and visible difference," said Eversource Energy Foundation President and Vice President of Community Partnership and Engagement Theresa Hopkins-Staten. "For 10 years, our employees have proudly worked alongside the Connecticut River Conservancy and volunteers across New England to help protect this important natural resource. ISO New England selects Eversource's joint transmission project as preferred long-term solution to enhance reliability and affordability. Project would expand transmission capacity between Maine and New Hampshire, improve reliability, and deliver significant regional economic benefits. MANCHESTER, N.H., Sept. 16, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Eversource today announced ISO New England's (ISO-NE) selection of the company's joint Transmission Initiative Down East (TIDE) project as the preferred longer-term transmission solution to meet regional needs outlined by ISO-NE in its competitive transmission solicitation process. The proposed TIDE project will enhance reliability for customers and enable new energy supply sources in northern New England - easing congestion on the regional transmission system and helping to address affordability. Through ISO-NE's competitive bid process, TIDE emerged as the strongest overall and most cost-effective solution to meet the region's energy needs with significant customer benefits - including expanded system capacity, reduced congestion costs, enhanced reliability and the ability to integrate to the regional grid up to 1,200 megawatts of future onshore wind generation in northern New England. The proposed project still requires extensive engineering, environmental, permitting and regulatory reviews, with construction anticipated to begin in 2029 pending all state and regulatory approvals. "This selection is an important step toward delivering the modern, reliable transmission infrastructure New England needs while enabling new supply resources that are so critical to addressing our region's longstanding energy affordability challenges," said Bill Quinlan, President of Transmission at Eversource. According to ISO New England's analysis, TIDE is projected to provide substantial regional benefits at a more than 2-to-1 cost-benefit ratio, including: * $1.42 billion in production cost and congestion savings * $1.30 billion in avoided capital investment * $694 million in avoided transmission investment, which ultimately equates to significant savings for customers Eversource's portion of the TIDE project will primarily involve upgrades and replacement of infrastructure entirely within existing rights-of-way in New Hampshire, with additional work in Maine and Massachusetts. In New Hampshire, the project includes a new 18-mile, 345 kilovolt (kV) line, a rebuild of one of the existing 345 kV lines from a two-pole, H-frame design to a single-pole, reconductoring one of the existing 345 kV lines and installation of equipment to help regulate voltage and power quality. The project is designed to maximize the use of established transmission rights-of-way and existing infrastructure, which minimizes environmental and community impacts while efficiently delivering capacity, strengthening the grid, and relieving energy bottlenecks for the entire region.
