Mobile's 'Fighting With Hope' gets $5K boost from Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation. Posted: Jun 25, 2026 / 10:05 AM CDT Updated: Jun 25, 2026 / 11:28 AM CDT Video above: From the WKRG.com Archives - 'Fighting with Hope' Red Couch interview MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) - The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation has donated $5,000 to Mobile's Fighting With Hope. The donation marks Day 24 of Nexstar's "30 Days of Giving" initiative. The nonprofit was started by Mobile native Emily King, who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2019. King and her husband, Brady, wanted to help other cancer patients going through chemotherapy. This charity provides chemo box care packages for people with cancer; each package includes gifts, a letter, and a blanket. "This organization is personal to us at WKRG," Jesse Grear, the station's general manager, said. "Emily was the sister of Caroline Carithers, one of our meteorologists. And 'Fighting With Hope' was started after finding out all the things cancer patients could use during their struggles. "These 'Hope Boxes' sent to cancer patients through your donations provide some temporary comfort during really hard times and when 'hope' may be the only thing they're hanging onto." "Sadly, Emily passed away on February 20, 2025, at the age of 33. But through 'Fighting With Hope,' and Emily's memory, other cancer patients receive 'Hope' boxes still today, giving them some comfort and the understanding that others do care, and are out there fighting for them."

(WLNS) - A local nonprofit working to empower teens has received a $5,000 donation from Nexstar Media Group, the parent company of 6 News. The $5,000 donation is part of the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation's 30 Days of Giving initiative, celebrating the company's 30th anniversary. Every day throughout the month of June, Nexstar is donating to two organizations nominated by Nexstar's employees. WLNS employees nominated Building Twentyone. Of the more than 100 organizations that were nominated, it was one of 60 selected to receive funding. Building Twentyone serves teens throughout the Lansing area through its summer programs, Friday social events, a ninja gym and other resources, according to its website. The goal is to help teens gain confidence and build a community before age 21. The nonprofit's building was destroyed by a fire in 2018. Last year, it opened its new facility in Mason. "We are proud to support Building Twentyone," WLNS Vice President and General Manager Marci Daniels said in a statement. 30 Days of Giving: The ANNA Shelter named as recipient of $5,000 grant. by: Gary Weitman Posted: Jun 24, 2026 / 11:00 AM EDT Updated: Jun 24, 2026 / 05:42 PM EDT Irving, TX (June 24, 2026) - Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST), today announced that the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation is making a $5,000 contribution to both The ANNA Shelter and Harvest Compassion Center as part of the company's "30 Days of Giving" initiative, a month-long program recognizing and supporting nonprofit and charitable organizations serving communities across Nexstar's nationwide footprint. "30 Days of Giving" is an employee-driven initiative created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nexstar's founding in June 1996. Locally-led committees reviewed submissions from Nexstar's 13,000 employees and selected charitable and nonprofit organizations to nominate for grants. More than 100 organizations were nominated, and the Nexstar Charitable Foundation's Board of Directors chose 60 to receive $5,000 each. Every day during the month of June, the Foundation will award two $5,000 grants; by the end of the month the Foundation will have committed $300,000 to "30 Days of Giving." The ANNA Shelter and Harvest Compassion Center were nominated by employees at WJET/WFXP-TV, the Nexstar television stations serving Erie, PA, and KAZT-TV in Phoenix, AZ, respectively. The ANNA Shelter finds permanent homes for more than 7,000 homeless and abandoned animals each year, including horses, farm animals, and other animals besides cats and dogs. Since opening in June 2004, the shelter has expanded its impact through a range of community-focused programs, including animal safety education for students from pre-K through college, pet therapy visits at local nursing homes, and as an official chapter of the National Pets for Vets Program, provides pets for veterans. The organization also works with local law enforcement in Erie and Crawford Counties to investigate animal welfare concerns and prosecute offenders in cases involving cruelty or neglect committed against animals. In 2025, the ANNA Shelter's founder and executive director, Ruth Thompson, was named WJET's nominee for Remarkable Woman of the Year. "Ruth Thompson and her team at The ANNA Shelter are passionate about their mission, and we are thrilled to help support them through the Nexstar Charitable Foundation and Nexstar's '30 Days of Giving,'" said Spencer Lane, Vice President of WJET/WFXP-TV in Erie, PA. "Their dedication to both the animals they rescue and care for, as well as the greater Erie community, is second to none. We are grateful for all they do in our community!" The Harvest Compassion Center (HCC) provides food and clothing in a welcoming, hope-filled environment to underserved individuals and families across the greater Phoenix area. Its innovative "Food Banking Reimagined" model sets it apart from traditional food assistance programs. Across its four locations, HCC offers free access to food, clothing, baby essentials, and hygiene items through a dignified "shopping" experience, featuring a mini-mart, clothing boutique, and a dedicated play area for children. "Our team at KAZT, Arizona's CW, is inspired by the mission and impact of Harvest Compassion Center," said Matthew Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager of Nexstar's Broadcast division. "Their commitment to providing hope to individuals and families facing hardship helps strengthen our entire community. They serve with dignity, compassion, and respect, and we are honored to support an organization that makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of so many Arizonans." The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation's mission is to contribute to and work with public charities and non-profit organizations to improve the communities in which Nexstar Media and its subsidiaries do business.
