Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A New York State Commercial Pesticide License or the ability to obtain one within three years.
  • A minimum of six years of experience with landscape maintenance and construction and related equipment operation, including a minimum of three years of experience operating heavy motorized construction and snowplow equipment exceeding 25,000 pounds and providing leadership relating to landscape and utility construction work, materials, and equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal oral and written skills to interact with a diverse range of people.
  • The ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community.
  • Motivation to learn and initiative to be proactive.
  • Demonstrated experience using good judgment and problem-solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Previous experience reading plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
  • Experience planning and coordinating work crews.
  • A valid driver's license that must be maintained, with the ability to operate a personal or Cornell-owned motor vehicle to travel to and from job sites.
  • A CDLB restricted license, or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
  • The ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and participate in random drug and alcohol testing.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and provide guidance in the skilled operation of landscape, construction, maintenance, lawn-maintenance, motorized wheeled, commercial truck, and tractor equipment exceeding 25,000 pounds to support landscape and utility construction, general excavation, and snow plowing.
  • Perform manual labor, including shoveling, catch-basin cleaning, tamping, litter control, herbicide applications, and similar assigned tasks.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscapes, equipment, or facilities.
  • Provide on-the-job training by demonstrating the proper use of equipment and materials and the methods for accomplishing specific tasks.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and estimating jobs.
  • Respond to call-ins 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies.
  • Work shift changes and extended hours, including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet seasonal work demand.
  • Work in weather-related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods.
  • Work in conditions that may involve contact with sewage and dead animals.
  • Work in conditions with regular exposure to bees and pollen.
  • Attend staff-development training and participate in the performance-evaluation process.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in construction technology or landscape operations.
  • Formal training in heavy-equipment operation and/or construction technologies.
  • An OSHA 10 course.
