Switched Source raises over $17M to speed up utility grid capacity expansion

Switched Source, a Chicago-based grid technology developer, has raised more than $17 million to scale production of its Phase-EQ device, which helps utilities add grid capacity without building new infrastructure. Cubit Capital led the round, with ABB, Emerald Technology Ventures, Red Cedar Ventures, Southern States, and Southwire Company taking part. The money will expand manufacturing and testing, and the company is hiring in manufacturing, quality, and supply chain roles. Phase-EQ balances power across the three phases of distribution circuits. It has logged more than 150,000 run hours across twelve utilities, with field data showing 10% to 25% gains in load-serving capacity. Lead time from purchase order to activation is typically 14 to 20 weeks, against one to three years for many traditional upgrades.

ABB launches Infinitus system for AI data centres amid Southeast Asia capacity surge to 9.4 GW

ABB has launched Infinitus, a solution designed for AI data centers. The company projects that Southeast Asia's data center capacity will grow from 2.8 GW to 9.4 GW by 2035. The launch aligns with a broader industry trend towards high-voltage DC designs for AI infrastructure. Vertiv previously indicated such systems could support AI expansion, whilst Nvidia stated that 800 VDC architectures could power next-generation AI facilities. The move represents ABB's response to increasing power demands from artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.

ABB launches IP66/Type 4X drives for Australia's harsh industrial environments

ABB has launched ACS580, ACH580 and ACQ580 drives with IP66/Type 4X protection for Australia's demanding industrial environments. The drives are tailored for food and beverage, HVACR, and water and wastewater applications exposed to dust, water, humidity and outdoor weather. The IP66/Type 4X design allows drives to be positioned closer to applications, potentially reducing installation costs by eliminating protective enclosures and shortening motor cable runs. Built-in features include coated circuit boards, integrated EMC C2 filtering, DC choke for harmonic mitigation, and Safe Torque Off. ABB emphasises that IP66 rating only covers dust and water ingress protection. Environmental characteristics like UV, corrosion and chemical resistance require separate assessment. The drives are available in power ratings from 5.5 kW to 22 kW.
