- A high school diploma is required.
- Graduation from an accredited two-year program in nuclear medicine technology is required.
- Certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist or eligibility for certification is required, or registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or eligibility for registration.
- The technologist must become certified or registered within six months of employment, or pass the first available examination if an exam is not offered during the first six months.
- A New York State Department of Health license is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required; American Heart Association certification is accepted.
- Provide patient comfort and care before, during, and after procedures, including monitoring intravenous lines, oxygen supplies, and drains.
- Communicate appropriately with patients by introducing the procedure and explaining relevant information.
- Recognize and respond to emergency situations within the scope of training and competency.
- Verify patient identification, pregnancy status, breastfeeding status, and written procedure orders, and ensure informed consent is obtained as required.
- Confirm that the procedure indication is appropriate and consult the authorized user or referring physician when necessary.
- Obtain pertinent patient histories and record internal notes in the Picture Archiving and Communication System.
- Ensure pre-procedural preparation is complete, including fasting, hydration, thyroid blocking compounds, voiding, bowel cleansing, and suspension of interfering medications.
- Explain procedures, patient involvement, study length, and radiation safety issues to patients and families.
- Maintain inventory of medical and surgical supplies, radiopharmaceuticals, storage media, and other procedure-related items.
- Maintain records of administered radioactivity, quality-control procedures, patient reports, and other required records.
- Coordinate patient transportation with nursing units and transporters, and transport patients as needed.
- Check in patient procedures, enter patient data into the hospital computer system, manage orders accurately, and maintain Picture Archiving and Communication System quality-assurance and quality-control processes.
- Report issues to the supervisor that could improve department efficiency.
- Ensure proper performance of imaging systems, storage media, radiation detection and counting devices, scintillation cameras, dose calibrators, survey instruments, sodium iodide scintillation probes, well counters, and image-processing devices.
- Prepare, evaluate, and administer appropriate radiopharmaceuticals or pharmaceuticals under the direction of an authorized user.
- Establish or maintain venous access routes according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Select appropriate imaging and data-collection parameters.
- Administer radiopharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals through oral, intravesical, inhalant, intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal routes under the direction of an authorized user.
