Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • AMD’s Q2 2026 revenue reached $11.54 billion, with data center sales up 107%.
  • Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 chips starting first-half 2027.
  • MI455X launched in July 2026 with 432GB HBM4, strengthening large-model inference positioning.

What critics are saying

  • Nvidia still dominates AI GPUs, forcing AMD to prove Helios wins by 2027.
  • Google TPU, AWS Trainium, and Microsoft Maia shrink AMD’s merchant silicon addressable market.
  • HBM4, TSMC 2nm, and 72-GPU rack complexity create supply and execution bottlenecks.

What makes AMD unique

  • AMD Helios bundles MI455X, EPYC Venice, Pensando, and ROCm into one rack.
  • AMD’s ROCm open stack targets AI customers wanting CUDA alternatives and software control.
  • AMD’s 2026 turnkey AI platform differentiates through integrated systems, not standalone GPUs.

Anthropic signs $45B cloud deal with Nscale ahead of planned IPO

Anthropic has reportedly signed a $45 billion cloud computing deal with UK-based Nscale, marking one of the largest infrastructure agreements in AI history. The six-year arrangement will provide Anthropic with approximately 460 megawatts of compute capacity at a West Virginia data centre, powered by NVIDIA's Vera Rubin chips and expected online by late 2027. The deal follows a series of major infrastructure commitments, including a $1.25 billion monthly payment to SpaceX through May 2029 for data centre access. Anthropic, which confidentially filed for an IPO in June, currently holds a $965 billion valuation and projects annual revenue growth from $47 billion to $200 billion by 2028. The aggressive expansion aims to address capacity constraints as demand for its Claude AI models surges.

AMD's MI455X AI chip packs 432GB memory, 50% more than prior model amid rising costs

AMD has introduced the Instinct MI455X AI accelerator, featuring 432 gigabytes of HBM4 memory — 50% more than its predecessor, the MI355X, which has 288 GB. The increased capacity allows larger AI models to remain in local memory near the processor. AMD positions the MI455X against Nvidia's Vera Rubin GPUs, claiming 15% better peak performance in one AI math format. The company's rack-scale system, Helios, contains 31 terabytes of HBM4 and is entering production this quarter. However, the expansion comes amid rising memory costs. SK Hynix, the leading high-bandwidth memory maker, reported second-quarter revenue up 257% year over year with a 76% operating margin. AMD has partnered with Anthropic to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 series chips in Helios racks.

AMD trades at 116x earnings after 12% pullback, despite 40% revenue growth fuelled by data centre AI demand

AMD shares have pulled back around 12% from their one-month peak, trading 21% below their 52-week high, despite strong fundamentals driven by AI infrastructure demand. The chipmaker posted 40% revenue growth over the trailing twelve months, significantly outpacing the S&P 500 median of 8.4%. Data centre revenue more than doubled year-over-year, now accounting for 58% of total revenue, fuelled by demand for EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators. Operating cash flow margin reached 24%, ahead of the market median. However, investors face steep valuations, with AMD trading at a price-to-earnings multiple of 115.9 versus the S&P 500 median of 23.5. The company's operating margin of 15.7% trails the market median, whilst its fastest-growing AI business carries below-average gross margins.

AMD drops 2.9% to $459 as Nvidia earnings loom over AI chip sector

Advanced Micro Devices fell approximately 2.9% to $459.24 on Monday as semiconductor stocks declined ahead of Nvidia's earnings report on 26 August. The chipmaker's second-quarter revenue hit a record $11.5 billion, with roughly $6.7 billion from data centres. OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic have placed major orders for AMD accelerators. However, the stock trades at approximately 118 times trailing earnings, with its market price sitting 67.18% above analyst estimates. The decline signals growing investor scrutiny of AI chip valuations. Agreements with major customers must survive years of development and deployment before generating expected returns. Investors are now demanding proof of execution rather than promises.
